Easter is traditionally closely linked to customs, but today these are often replaced by modern habits. That\u2019s not a bad thing\u2014after all, people are just as eager to discover the city\u2019s latest brunch spot<\/a> or visit a digital art exhibition<\/a>. Everyone decides for themselves what the holidays should look like. However, anyone who wants to truly immerse themselves in a different era and experience culture firsthand this coming Easter weekend should head a bit out of the city. Whether it\u2019s the spectacular Easter knights\u2019 festival in Brandenburg<\/a> or an Easter spectacle at an 800-year-old castle<\/a> \u2014the choices are plentiful. And there\u2019s a new favorite on the list: The D\u00fcppel Museum Village is an open-air museum in southern Berlin (Zehlendorf\/Nikolassee) that transports you straight back to the 13th century. It is part of the Berlin City Museum and opened in 1975.<\/p>\n

Instead of a traditional exhibition, history comes to life at the D\u00fcppel Museum Village: houses, animals, crafts, and agriculture are presented just as they actually were around 800 years ago \u2014not just to look at, but to experience. The village is based on archaeological finds from a Slavic settlement dating from around 1170, which was abandoned around 1230 and later scientifically reconstructed.<\/p>\n

Today, you can discover a fully reconstructed medieval village here, spread over about eight hectares. What makes it special: It\u2019s not a static museum, but a so-called \u201cliving history\u201d site. So you don\u2019t just see objects\u2014you get a sense of how people really lived back then.<\/p>\n

The museum village comes alive at Easter. Instead of traditional Easter markets, you\u2019ll find a nature-filled, medieval-themed experience centered on spring, tradition, and hands-on activities. During the Easter season and Easter break (approx. March 28 to April 12, 2026), the village is open daily (except Wednesdays) \u2014perfect for a spontaneous outing.<\/p>\n

Around Easter, the D\u00fcppel Open-Air Museum hosts the event \u201cSpring Awakening at the Open-Air Museum,\u201d which runs for several days during the holidays. During this time , the entire village transforms into an interactive experience area where visitors can actively participate. Among other things, you can paint Easter eggs or get creative with natural materials. <\/p>\n

For families, there are historical children\u2019s games and various hands-on stations. At the same time, fresh sourdough bread is baked in the clay oven, while flame bread is toasted over an open fire . The program is complemented by a live narrator who provides fascinating insights into nutrition and daily life in the Middle Ages .<\/p>\n
