{"id":16974,"date":"2026-05-20T13:41:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T13:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/16974\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T13:41:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T13:41:09","slug":"american-doctor-with-ebola-flown-to-germany-for-emergency-treatment-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/16974\/","title":{"rendered":"American doctor with Ebola flown to Germany for \u2018emergency treatment\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">(Gray News) &#8211; An American doctor who tested positive for Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was flown to Berlin, Germany, for \u201cemergency treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Dr. Peter Stafford is also a Christian missionary in the country, according to Serge, the international charity he works for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Stafford is getting treatment in a special isolation ward at the Charit\u00e9 hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Dr. Peter Stafford, an American doctor and missionary, was flown to Germany after testing...\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779284469_930_QREE7C63XVEEHH2MDAL357MC5Y.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>Dr. Peter Stafford, an American doctor and missionary, was flown to Germany after testing positive for Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo.(Serge via CNN Newsource)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A \u201ccomprehensive examination\u201d was taking place to determine how to proceed with treatment, German Health Ministry spokesperson Martin Els\u00e4sser said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to Serge, Stafford was unable to walk on his own when he was being flown to Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cHe looked really tired and really sick,\u201d Dr. Scott Myhre, East and Central Africa area director for Serge, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/american-doctor-ebola-evacuated-germany-wife-four-children-congo-rcna345961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/american-doctor-ebola-evacuated-germany-wife-four-children-congo-rcna345961\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to NBC News, Stafford operated on a 33-year-old patient who had severe abdominal pain days before the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the outbreak. At the time, doctors believed the patient had a gallbladder infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Stafford \u201cdid an abdominal procedure and found that the gallbladder was normal and closed him up, but this patient subsequently died the next day,\u201d Myhre said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The patient was buried before he could be tested for Ebola, but days later, officials realized he most likely died of Ebola.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Stafford began developing symptoms over the weekend and tested positive on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">His wife, Dr. Rebekah Stafford, the couple\u2019s four children and another physician are being monitored for Ebola.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Health officials believe the Ebola outbreak has caused more than 130 deaths so far.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Gray Local Media, Inc.
