BEIJING, April 2 (Reuters) – China on Thursday repeated calls for a ceasefire in the Middle East and safe passage \u200cthrough the Strait of Hormuz in conversations with Western \u200ccounterparts, widening its diplomatic effort to end the war that has disrupted the \u200bglobal energy market.<\/p>\n
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the Middle East situation in separate phone calls with the European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas and Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, appealing for joint \u200cefforts to push for \u2060a prompt end to the war.<\/p>\n
A ceasefire is the key to safe navigation through the Strait of \u2060Hormuz, Wang told Kallas, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.<\/p>\n
“All parties should work to build a broader consensus to this end \u200band create \u200bthe necessary conditions,” Wang was \u200bquoted as telling Kallas.<\/p>\n
Separately, the \u200cChinese diplomat told Wadephul that as responsible major countries, China and Germany should uphold an objective and impartial stance and play a constructive role in the process, according to another Chinese statement.<\/p>\n
China has called U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran a violation of international law \u200cand demanded an end to the \u200bmilitary action, which triggered Iranian strikes \u200bagainst Israel, U.S. bases \u200band Gulf states.<\/p>\n
Wang on Thursday called for the protection \u200cof sovereignty and security of \u200bthe Gulf countries, \u200bas well as the safety of civilians, non-military targets and maritime routes, adding diplomatic pressure on not just the U.S. \u200band Israel but \u200calso Iran to come to the table for negotiations \u200bfor a ceasefire.<\/p>\n
