{"id":26471,"date":"2026-05-29T15:09:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T15:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/26471\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T15:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T15:09:15","slug":"jay-leno-finally-drives-a-bmw-isetta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/26471\/","title":{"rendered":"Jay Leno Finally Drives a BMW Isetta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jay Leno has driven some unusual vehicles over the years, everything from a <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.classiccars.com\/2024\/10\/30\/jerrari-joyride-jay-leno-drives-a-jeep-ferrari-hybrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ferrari V-12-powered Jeep Wagoneer<\/a> to his <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.classiccars.com\/2024\/12\/05\/jay-leno-takes-off-in-his-revived-chrysler-turbine-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chrysler Turbine Car<\/a> to a 1-of-1 <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.classiccars.com\/2026\/03\/04\/jay-leno-drives-a-1-of-1-1966-duesenberg-model-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1966 Duesenberg Model D prototype<\/a>. But it wasn\u2019t until recently that he got behind the wheel of one of the oddest machines ever: a 1958 <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.classiccars.com\/tag\/bmw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BMW<\/a> Isetta 300.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-5.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-5.jpg\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-5-1280x719.webp\" class=\"ml-lightbox-enabled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-5-1280x719.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-419784 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the name Isetta doesn\u2019t sound particularly German, that\u2019s because it isn\u2019t. It translates to \u201clittle Iso\u201d \u2014 Iso as in the Italian company that built the Grifo (the last of which <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZlC9vSgchHU?si=RJ9dj_VP5ibo2u2B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">we profiled here<\/a>). Ten years after the end of World War II, Europe was still recovering from its physical and financial devastation. German citizens had disposable income, but affordable transportation was still important. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.bmwgroup.com\/canada\/article\/detail\/T0023581EN\/50-years-of-bmw-isetta?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">According to BMW Pressclub Canada<\/a>, \u201cIt was on a visit to the 1954 Geneva Motor Show that a BMW dealer unearthed what was then something of a rough diamond. The Munich-based manufacturer then acquired the Isetta license from Italian firm Iso, gave the \u2018smooch-ball\u2019 a new drive unit \u2014 from a BMW single-cylinder motorcycle \u2014 and re-trimmed its Italian robes, before bringing its new car onto the market around a year later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-4.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-4.jpg\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-4-1280x719.webp\" class=\"ml-lightbox-enabled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-4-1280x719.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-419783 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The original BMW Isetta had a 250cc four-stroke one-cylinder engine that pumped out a mighty 12 horsepower. The following year, BMW expanded the model range with the Isetta 300, which had a 300cc engine with 13 horses, and could be upgraded with options such as a soft top, removable cargo platform, and stronger suspension. That front door (aka the only door) with the integrated steering column\/wheel? Standard equipment. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-6.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-6.jpg\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-6-1280x719.webp\" class=\"ml-lightbox-enabled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-6-1280x719.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-419785 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Leno\u2019s guest Danny Patlin owns a blue and white Isetta 300 with the soft top, which he calls an \u201cescape hatch.\u201d Given Patlin\u2019s height, it\u2019s surprising that he doesn\u2019t need to open it for extra headroom. In fact, considering that the Isetta is the equivalent a scooter with a cab, it\u2019s a marvel that both Patlin and Leno can sit next to each other without warring for elbow room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-8.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ccnjournalprodsa.blob.core.windows.net\/journalprod\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-8.jpg\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-8-1280x719.webp\" class=\"ml-lightbox-enabled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1958-BMW-Isetta-300-8-1280x719.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-419786 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once both men are situated, Leno sets off, shifting through the four gears of the Isetta\u2019s chain-drive motorcycle gearbox as the tiny engine putters along. Can they survive the potholes in the road ahead? Will the Isetta pull them up the hill that\u2019s part of their route?
