Middle school electives – yes. College choices — of course. Future career paths — obviously. But if I surprised one of my children with a brand-new car for high school graduation and their first response was to complain that it wasn’t a luxury model, I honestly don’t know what I would do. (It wouldn’t be cute.)

That’s why a recent Threads post stopped me in my tracks. A mom shared screenshots of a text exchange with her daughter after gifting her a Honda for graduation — complete with a giant red bow. Instead of excitement, though, the daughter was disappointed.

In a Threads post that had more than 10,000 comments, a mom shared screenshots of a text exchange with her daughter after buying her a Honda as a graduation gift. According to the post, the daughter was less than thrilled.

“I was expecting to get a Benz or a BMW,” the daughter wrote. “I appreciate you Mom but it’s just not my style. You drive a G-Wagon so me driving a basic Honda is weird.”

The 45-year-old mom’s response reflected shock and anger. “You realize you just graduated high school right?” she replied. She went on to remind her daughter that she had a roof over her head, no bills to pay, and college already covered. “If you’re not going to drive the car, I will sell it.”

The daughter’s final response? “Just sell it Ma. I don’t want it.”

The screenshots quickly made their way from Threads to Reddit, where commenters were overwhelmingly on the mother’s side.

Many argued that receiving any car as a high school graduation gift is an enormous privilege, while others suggested the daughter should receive no car at all if she wasn’t willing to appreciate the one she was given.

“If you don’t like that Honda, you’re really gonna hate this bus pass,” one commenter joked.

As a Xennial mom myself — in just about the same age category as the mom who gifted the car — I found the exchange genuinely difficult to relate to. When I was growing up, getting any car as a teenager felt like winning the lottery. (My first car was a 1998 Ford Escort when I was 21, and I was positively chuffed. That car was my baby!)

Most of my friends drove aging hand-me-downs, shared family vehicles, or cars that had already lived several previous lives before reaching them. The idea of rejecting a brand-new Honda — festooned with a big red bow and balloon! — because it wasn’t luxury enough would have seemed almost unimaginable.

Of course, social media may be changing the equation — in mostly negative ways, as is it wont to do. Today’s teenagers grow up in a world where luxury lifestyles are constantly on display. Expensive cars, designer labels, and influencer culture can make things that were once aspirational seem oddly normal. A teenager comparing herself to a parent driving a luxury SUV may not view a Honda through the same lens as previous generations did.

Even so, what seemed to resonate most with commenters wasn’t the specific car brand involved. It was the broader question of gratitude.

The original Threads post drew hundreds of responses from adults who said they would have been thrilled to receive a reliable vehicle at that age. Others shared stories about working and saving for years to buy their first cars themselves.

A few commenters cautioned against rushing to judge the daughter or the mother’s parenting based on a single text exchange, noting that outsiders don’t know the family’s dynamics. I mean, I guess. But although it’s true that a screenshot rarely tells the whole story, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen enough.

At any rate, the reaction struck a nerve because it touches on something many parents worry about: how to raise kids who appreciate what they have in a culture that constantly encourages them to want more.

Whether you think the daughter was spoiled, misunderstood, or simply being an honest teenager (how generous of you!), one thing is clear: a brand-new Honda is still a dream gift for a lot of people, at any age.

At any rate, the reaction struck a nerve because it touches on something many parents worry about: how to raise kids who appreciate what they have in a culture that constantly encourages them to want more.

Maybe that’s why so many adults saw themselves in the mom’s frustration. It wasn’t really about Honda versus BMW. It was about the gap between what one person sees as an extraordinary gift and what another sees as a letdown.

My kids are still years away from driving, and who knows what the world will look like by then. (My sincere hope is they can stay off the roads as much as possible and minimize their risk exposure.) But if I ever find myself surprising them with a brand-new car, I can tell you one thing: If their response is that they were expecting something more expensive because mommy and daddy (who have each been working for 25 years) drive nicer cars… well, they’ll quickly discover that walking is still free.

There are plenty of milestones where I expect my kids to have opinions.
