\u201cI would like to point out \u2014 since Vance is complaining about the EU\u2019s alleged interference in the election \u2014 that the U.S. vice president was in Hungary just a few days before the election. This fact alone speaks for itself as to who is interfering,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Standing next to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n in Budapest on Tuesday, Vance argued<\/a> that \u201cwhat has happened in this country, what has happened in the midst of this election campaign, is one of the worst examples of foreign election interference that I\u2019ve ever seen or even read about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance also slammed<\/a> \u201cthe bureaucrats in Brussels, who have done everything that they can to hold down the people of Hungary, because they don\u2019t like the leader, who has actually stood up for the people of Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n

After delivering a full-throated endorsement of Orb\u00e1n, the vice president faced immediate criticism from Hungary\u2019s opposition for trying to put his thumb on the scale in another country\u2019s election. The White House views Orb\u00e1n and his so-called illiberal democracy as a key ideological ally in Europe.<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Orb\u00e1n multiple times during the campaign, marking an unusual show of support from the U.S. for a European leader who is battling for reelection.<\/p>\n

Opposition leader P\u00e9ter Magyar criticized Vance\u2019s visit on X<\/a>. \u201cNo foreign country may interfere in Hungarian elections,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThis is our country. Hungarian history is not written in Washington, Moscow, or Brussels \u2014 it is written in Hungary\u2019s streets and squares.\u201d<\/p>\n
