{"id":3092,"date":"2026-04-08T17:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T17:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/3092\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T17:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T17:12:10","slug":"la-llorona-helmer-jayro-bustamante-unveils-new-film-eruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/3092\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;La Llorona&#8217; Helmer Jayro Bustamante Unveils New Film &#8216;Eruption&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGuatemala\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jayro-bustamante\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jayro-bustamante\" data-tag=\"jayro-bustamante\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayro Bustamante<\/a>, whose feature \u201cMountains of Fire\u201d (\u201cCordillera de Fuego\u201d) screens at the 14th <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/iff-panama\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iff-panama\" data-tag=\"iff-panama\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IFF Panama<\/a>, is in production on his latest work, \u201cEruption,\u201d (\u201cErupci\u00f3n\u201d) which aims to shed light on his country\u2019s turbulent history through art and dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to make this film for 10 years because there is no book that tells the real history of Guatemala. Books out there recount moments, but they leave out the whole part about the genocide and about Spanish subjugation. They just focus on how important the wars are and the wars that have been won,\u201d said Bustamante whose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/la-llorona\/\" id=\"auto-tag_la-llorona\" data-tag=\"la-llorona\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Llorona<\/a>\u201d won the director award at 2019\u2019s Venice Days and was shortlisted for an International Feature Oscar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe describes \u201cEruption\u201d as a documentary-art film, where he incorporates dance sequences alongside interviews with such luminaries as Rigoberta Mench\u00fa Tum, a K\u2019iche\u2019 Guatemalan human rights activist, feminist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and current Guatemalan president Bernardo Ar\u00e9valo. \u201cThe film is built as a collective story, woven from the voices of women, students, artists and indigenous peoples. There is no single protagonist but a conversation across generations and memories. Each voice speaks from its territory and experience, together forming a collective portrait of who we are when we refuse to disappear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe chose the language of dance to further express these complex themes and give voice to social and political narratives. \u201cWe are using dance as the language that helps us feel the emotions of those moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNot unlike his acclaimed feature, \u201cLa Llorona,\u201d h<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/jayro-bustamante-indigenous-issues-first-comedy-1236360500\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is latest opus \u201cMountains of Fire\u201d and other films, Bustamante seeks to inform on Indigenous issues <\/a>that have long been buried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGuatemala, land of volcanoes and ancient peoples, has spent over 500 years searching for a way to live in equality. From the conquest to the present day, the 23 nations that inhabit this territory \u2013 Maya, Xinca, Gar\u00edfuna, and mestizo \u2013 have resisted systems that excluded them, colonial powers that exploited them and governments that divided them,\u201d the film\u2019s manifesto declares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEruption\u201d will trace the history of Guatemala, starting with the arrival of the Spanish, the search for independence and for democracy. \u201cBut instead of democracy, what was obtained were military regimes and dictatorships. When we finally achieved democracy, we had the intervention of the U.S. with the CIA and the United Fruit Company, and then they stirred up a whole war that lasted 40 years and destroyed the country and after that, how did we get out of that war? Because that war ended in genocide and after the genocide, how did we rebuild ourselves? Until we began to live in the new era, which is the era of corruption and cartels where we are still fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAll this sounds a bit like a history of a submissive people.
