DHL Group has launched a new global training initiative designed to strengthen logistics capabilities among humanitarian organisations and improve the delivery of aid during emergencies.<\/p>\n
The DHL Academy of Humanitarian Logistics (DAHL) will provide free training to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local responders, helping them build practical logistics skills before disasters strike.<\/p>\n
The programme was officially launched in Johannesburg, where humanitarian organisations gathered for training sessions covering key logistics disciplines including customs procedures, dangerous goods handling, packaging standards and operational safety.<\/p>\n
Focus on local humanitarian responders<\/p>\n
DAHL forms part of DHL\u2019s long-running GoHelp corporate citizenship programme and is intended to convert the company\u2019s logistics expertise into practical training for humanitarian organisations.<\/p>\n
The initiative places particular emphasis on supporting local and regional responders, enabling them to strengthen operational readiness, reduce delays and improve the efficiency of aid distribution during crises.<\/p>\n
According to DHL, humanitarian operations are facing increasing pressure from climate-related disasters, prolonged conflicts and a growing number of complex emergencies worldwide.<\/p>\n
Christoph Selig, Vice President of Sustainability Communications and Programs at DHL Group, said logistics has become increasingly important as humanitarian organisations adopt more anticipatory approaches and place greater emphasis on local leadership in emergency response.<\/p>\n
He said the academy would help organisations develop practical logistics capabilities while supporting more effective, locally led humanitarian operations.<\/p>\n
Building on two decades of disaster preparedness<\/p>\n
The academy becomes the third pillar of DHL\u2019s GoHelp programme, which has supported disaster preparedness and emergency response activities for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n
The initiative complements DHL\u2019s existing Disaster Response Teams, which deploy trained logistics specialists to support airports and relief operations following major disasters.<\/p>\n
It also builds on the company\u2019s Get Airports Ready for Disaster programme, which works with airports in disaster-prone regions to improve preparedness and resilience.<\/p>\n
Unlike those initiatives, DAHL focuses on transferring logistics knowledge directly to humanitarian organisations, helping them manage supply chains and relief operations more independently.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of aid workers already trained<\/p>\n
The programme has already been piloted internationally, with more than 650 participants from over 80 humanitarian organisations receiving training through a series of workshops and learning sessions.<\/p>\n
DHL said 96% of participants rated the training as valuable, highlighting demand for practical logistics expertise within the humanitarian sector.<\/p>\n
The academy\u2019s curriculum is designed around real-world operational challenges and is delivered by experienced DHL logistics professionals.<\/p>\n
Expansion planned across Africa<\/p>\n
The Sub-Saharan Africa rollout will include training sessions in several countries during 2026, including South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana and Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Training will be delivered through a combination of in-person workshops, virtual sessions, warehouse assessments and online learning modules.<\/p>\n
DHL said all courses will remain free of charge, ensuring that organisations of all sizes can access specialist logistics training regardless of their financial resources.<\/p>\n
Growing demand for humanitarian logistics expertise<\/p>\n
The launch comes as aid agencies increasingly focus on strengthening local response capabilities and improving supply chain resilience in regions vulnerable to natural disasters and humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n
