Timothy Price took command of the Army\u2019s only Europe-based Stryker regiment on Friday, returning to the unit nearly a decade after serving as one of its senior operations officers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Leadership of the Vilseck-based 2nd Cavalry Regiment formally passed from Col. Donald Neal to Price during a change-of-command ceremony at Tower Barracks in Grafenwoehr. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The regiment serves as one of the Army\u2019s key combat formations in Europe. It also has become one of the Army\u2019s leading formations for experimentation and modernization, helping develop emerging drone, counterdrone and other autonomous capabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Price was an operations officer with the unit at the squadron and regimental levels from 2016 to 2018, giving him firsthand experience with the mission he now leads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cFor 190 years, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment has answered the nation\u2019s calls (with a) clear lineage of innovation and global impact,\u201d Price said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mb2-plus4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/080626CAVALRYphotos05.jpg\" alt=\"A soldier speaks at a podium.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"default-font lh-default ma0 mh3 mt0 pb3\">\n\t\t\t\tCol. (Lydia Gordon\/Stars and Stripes)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The ceremony featured one of the regiment\u2019s long-standing cavalry traditions, with more than 100 soldiers wearing the black Stetson hats often associated with U.S. cavalry units. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The unit has also produced the winners of the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/army\/2025-08-28\/2nd-cavalry-reclaims-title-at-europe%E2%80%99s-best-squad-18905449.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for four consecutive years<\/a>, earning the opportunity to represent the theater at the Army-wide competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The 2nd Cavalry Regiment remains an important part of the Army\u2019s mission, said Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, commander of V Corps, the Army headquarters that oversees the unit and other U.S. forces in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cWe are in a critical period right now in Europe. (Lydia Gordon\/Stars and Stripes)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The 2nd Cavalry Regiment has repeatedly faced questions about its long-term presence in Germany under President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/europe\/2020-07-30\/what-will-it-take-to-move-12000-troops-from-germany-closures-time-and-lots-of-money-1787966.html1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump proposed to pull the regiment out of Germany<\/a> and transfer its soldiers elsewhere. That course of action was scrapped a year later by former President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Recent Pentagon plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/europe\/2026-05-01\/trump-withdraw-5000-troops-germany-21550153.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to withdraw 5,000 troops<\/a> from Germany renewed concerns about regiment\u2019s future. But no changes have been made to the training schedule or operational activities, defense officials have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">During Neal\u2019s tenure, the regiment played a prominent role in several Army initiatives. Among them is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/army\/2025-01-31\/army-top-enlisted-at-combined-resolve-16662418.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Transforming in Contact<\/a>, a program aimed at speeding battlefield innovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Another example is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/europe\/2026-05-20\/soldiers-test-counter-drone-systems-as-drones-reshape-warfare-21716813.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Project Flytrap<\/a>, an effort to improve the military\u2019s use of drones and counterdrone systems. It also continued to support NATO deterrence missions across Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">In his remarks Friday, Neal highlighted the unit\u2019s contributions to the evolving Army approach to warfare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cOver the last two years, the regiment has embodied what it means to be &#8230; always ready, always on the frontier\u2019s edge and lethal,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Col.
