Germany’s popular “Rock am Ring” and “Rock im Park” music festivals kick off on Friday, with three days of partying to come for tens of thousands of revellers.<\/p>\n
Around 70 concerts are scheduled to take place on stages at the twin festivals, held in the western Eifel region and in the southern city of Nuremberg until Sunday.<\/p>\n
Organizers are expecting around 90,000 music fans at Rock am Ring at the N\u00fcrburgring motorsports complex, and 80,000 at Rock im Park in Nuremberg.<\/p>\n
The two festivals, which traditionally mark the start of the summer music festival season are sold out, with the same bands set to perform at both events on different days.<\/p>\n
Kicking things off at Rock im Park on Friday are the German metalcore band Electric Callboy, the Danish metal group Volbeat and German hip hop artist Marteria.<\/p>\n
The metal band Loathe will open the festival at the Ring. Papa Roach, Babymetal and Limp Bizkit are also on the line-up for the first day of the festival.<\/p>\n
Shortly before the first concert, heavy showers fell in Nuremberg and N\u00fcrburg. The forecast predicts dry conditions later on, though it looks set to remain rather cool for June.<\/p>\n
High spirits despite the unpleasant weather<\/p>\n
The poor weather did nothing to dampen the music fans\u2019 spirits. \u201cWe\u2019re full of anticipation,\u201d said Thomas, who had travelled to Nuremberg from Dresden.<\/p>\n
\u201cBetter to dance in the mud than to sweat. Rain is better than it being too hot,\u201d said visitor Rebecca.<\/p>\n
Many of the festival-goers arrived at the sites on Thursday, with some partying hard until late into the night.<\/p>\n
Revellers were relying on wellies to wade through the mud between the tents.
