German utility Uniper is exploring a potential deal that would strengthen the planned Ksi Lisims LNG project in British Columbia<\/a>, as European interest grows in Canadian liquefied natural gas.<\/p>\n

Uniper and Ksi Lisims said on Monday that they have signed a \u201cletter of interest\u201d detailing commercial terms for a pending supply and purchase agreement for two million tonnes a year of LNG.<\/p>\n

Dusseldorf-based Uniper is seeking to increase its flexibility to schedule shipments of LNG globally. <\/p>\n

Momentum on LNG means it\u2019s time to dust off old plans, industry leaders say<\/a><\/p>\n

Europe has been experiencing an energy crunch since Russia \u2013 previously a major supplier of natural gas piped to Germany and other countries \u2013 invaded Ukraine in 2022. This year, conflict in the Middle East and turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz have upended the global LNG market, vastly reducing supplies. <\/p>\n

Houston-based Western LNG, the Nisga\u2019a Nation and a group of natural gas producers called Rockies LNG are collaborative partners in the Ksi Lisims project, which plans to ship 12 million tonnes of the fuel a year from northwest B.C. to Asia.<\/p>\n

Energy traders would use contracts to fulfill shipping commitments worldwide, to avoid the need to physically export from B.C. to Germany, via the Panama Canal. <\/p>\n

\u201cExpanding and diversifying our LNG supply portfolio remains a key priority for Uniper,\u201d the German company\u2019s chief executive officer, Michael Lewis, said in a news release. <\/p>\n

The Monday announcement builds on energy ties between Ksi Lisims and Germany that were established earlier this spring. <\/p>\n

Last month, German state-owned utility SEFE, or Securing Energy for Europe, said it signed a preliminary deal<\/a> to buy one million tonnes of LNG annually from Ksi Lisims, with shipments to begin in the early 2030s.<\/p>\n

The German government owns 99.12 per cent of Uniper and plans to reduce its stake to 25 per cent by the end of 2028 in a privatization process.<\/p>\n

The backers of Ksi Lisims are expected to make a final investment decision on the export project by the end of this year. Two floating production platforms are to be constructed in South Korea for Ksi Lisims if the decision is made to forge ahead.<\/p>\n

Paris-based TotalEnergies SE and a unit of London-based Shell PLC previously signed agreements to each buy two million tonnes a year of LNG from Ksi Lisims.<\/p>\n

Shell-led LNG Canada became this country\u2019s first export terminal for the fuel when it started shipments to Asia in mid-2025 from Kitimat, B.C.<\/p>\n

Last week, contractors for LNG Canada said they will be preparing the Kitimat site for a potential expansion<\/a> that would double the export terminal\u2019s capacity.<\/p>\n

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said he is optimistic about LNG Canada\u2019s Phase 2 expansion plans. \u201cLast year, we were on the 50-yard line. We were on the 20-yard line a few weeks ago,\u201d he said in a recent interview. \u201cWe\u2019re going to try and create the environment so they can punch the ball into the end zone, and we can spike the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

B.C., Ottawa reach pact to support LNG Canada\u2019s expansion plans<\/a><\/p>\n

As for shipments of the fuel from B.C. to Asia, Mr. Hodgson said Canadian LNG avoids clogged supply chains elsewhere in the world. \u201cImportantly, it\u2019s a source of supply that isn\u2019t subject to a key choke point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nisga\u2019a leaders have touted the $10-billion Ksi Lisims project and the planned Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline project as prime examples of economic reconciliation.<\/p>\n

The $12-billion PRGT project, which is co-owned equally by the Nisga\u2019a and Western, would transport natural gas from northeast B.C. to Nisga\u2019a territory, near Pearse Island in northwest B.C.<\/p>\n

Critics say climate and health effects are being ignored, and they are urging governments to suspend LNG development on the West Coast and fracking for natural gas in northeast B.C.<\/p>\n

Ksi Lisims \u201cis far from a Canadian nation-building project waiting to happen,\u201d Alex Walker, energy analytics program manager at non-profit Environmental Defence, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Two projects are under construction in B.C. to produce the fuel, with the goal to export to Asia. Woodfibre LNG near Squamish is slated to finish building by late 2027, and Haisla Nation-led Cedar LNG in Kitimat is set for completion by late 2028.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Open this photo in gallery: Uniper’s logo at the company’s headquarters in Duesseldorf, Germany.
