{"id":33504,"date":"2026-06-10T03:31:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T03:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/33504\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T03:31:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T03:31:23","slug":"german-bess-market-has-moved-beyond-peak-hype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/33504\/","title":{"rendered":"German BESS market has moved beyond peak hype"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThere has really been not any focus at all on once projects are reserved, what\u2019s happening then?\u201d he asked. \u201cOne of the TSOs we\u2019re currently negotiating a contract with, a 380kV BESS connection, told us they have not signed any grid construction agreements for BESS; so they also don\u2019t know how it works!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really far away from standardising that process,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s rally interesting to see how little defined this process actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Challenges for TSOs and DSOs<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most strikingly, this \u2018tsunami\u2019 of interest in the German BESS market put pressure on both TSOs and DSOs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tsunami was not good for all of us,\u201d explained Lars Josten, project director of Germany at Giga Storage. \u201cIt created a horror scenario on the TSO and DSO side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was all driven by a lot of promising revenue curves from developers, who didn\u2019t understand quite how the German market is working; there\u2019s this shocking number of over 800 TSOs and DSOs, so you want to fit your revenue model to an operating system and this turned out [to be] not good for a lot of them,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Klink, director of grid and policy at developer Noveria Energy, meanwhile, said that broader uncertainties around aspects of the German market, like BKZ fees, created the conditions where more speculative grid applications could be made, adding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-storage.news\/german-large-scale-bess-projects-have-built-industry-confidence-but-fca-grid-and-revenue-challenges-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the backlog that has long been a feature of the German market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look back a couple of years, you have the situation where sub-TSOs didn\u2019t ask for a BKZ payment; there were no criteria to hand in a grid application\u2014at least at the TSO level\u2014and we know of early projects where you didn\u2019t even have to bring, let\u2019s say, a land reservation, so it was really easy to hand in the papers saying \u2018I want grid access here\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also know that some people have done that very systemically, flooding the TSOs with these applications, and I think this has gone down now and it needs to go down,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe big question is what happens in the next one to two years.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cThere has really been not any focus at all on once projects are reserved, what\u2019s happening then?\u201d he&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":33505,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[4605,151,5,31306,27267],"class_list":["post-33504","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-germany","tag-energystorageeurope","tag-europe","tag-germany","tag-grid-backlog","tag-grids"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33504","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=33504"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33504\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/33505"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=33504"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=33504"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=33504"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
