They sold each one for around \u00a31 million. By any conventional business logic, this was catastrophic. For every car that left the factory in Molsheim, France, the company lost roughly \u00a34 million. Across the 450 cars eventually produced, that is a staggering amount of money to lose on what is, at its most basic description, a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Jeremy Clarkson, who drove the Veyron for Top Gear and later declared it the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we would ever see in our lifetime, understood exactly what was happening: &#8220;Volkswagen designed the car merely as a technical exercise.&#8221; Not a profitable product. Not a halo car designed to sell more Polos. A proof of concept. A statement. A demonstration that the engineers employed by one of the world&#8217;s largest automotive companies could do something that had never been done before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">They could. And the Bugatti Veyron is what that looks like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Problem They Were Trying to Solve<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">When Volkswagen acquired the rights to the Bugatti name in 1998, they faced a question that had no obvious answer: what should a revived Bugatti actually be?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The EB 110, produced under previous ownership in the early 1990s, had been a remarkable machine, fast, beautiful, genuinely special. But it had not survived. The company had gone bankrupt. Bugatti was a name without a car, and Volkswagen needed to decide what that name was worth and what it would take to justify it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Their answer, arrived at through a series of concept cars between 1998 and 2000, was essentially: build the most extreme car we possibly can. Not the most extreme car in a particular price bracket, or the most extreme car that could be reasonably manufactured, but the most extreme car that the combined engineering resources of the Volkswagen Group could conceive and execute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The decision to begin production was made in 2001. The first roadworthy prototype was completed in August 2003. Technical problems repeatedly delayed the launch. The car finally entered production in September 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">What emerged was the Veyron EB 16.4, named in honour of Pierre Veyron, a Bugatti test driver and racing driver who, alongside Jean-Pierre Wimille, won the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a Bugatti. The EB stands for Ettore Bugatti, the company&#8217;s founder. The 16.4 refers to the engine&#8217;s 16 cylinders and four turbochargers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Engine That Required Ten Radiators<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The heart of the Veyron is one of the most extraordinary internal combustion engines ever fitted to a road car, and understanding it requires understanding that it is essentially two engines in one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The W16 configuration places 16 cylinders in four banks of four, arranged in a W shape. Think of it as two narrow-angle V8 engines bolted together at the crankshaft. Each cylinder has four valves, for a total of 64. Four turbochargers, one pair serving each side of the engine, force air into the combustion chambers at pressures that produce what the numbers describe but the mind struggles to process: 987 horsepower and 922 lb-ft of torque from an 8.0-litre displacement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">To manage the heat that this engine produces, the Veyron requires ten separate radiators: three air-to-liquid intercooler loop radiators, three engine water-cooling radiators, one air conditioning condenser, one transmission oil radiator, one differential oil radiator, and one engine oil radiator. The car breathes 45,000 litres of air per minute at full throttle, as much as a human being breathes in four days. James May noted this after driving it to its top speed at Volkswagen&#8217;s Ehra-Lessien test track. It is the kind of detail that makes you stop and re-read it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The transmission, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic built by Ricardo of England rather than the standard Volkswagen Group supplier, shifts in less than 150 milliseconds. A replacement unit costs just over $120,000. The specially developed Michelin PAX run-flat tyres, designed specifically to handle the Veyron&#8217;s top speed loads, cost $25,000 per set. They can only be mounted on the wheels at one facility in France, a service that costs $70,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">None of this is accidental extravagance. Every component exists because the engineers could not achieve what they were trying to achieve without it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Performance Numbers<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Zero to 62 mph: 2.46 seconds. Zero to 124 mph: 7.3 seconds. Zero to 186 mph: 16.7 seconds. Top speed: 407 km\/h \u2014 253 mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">These figures, which were genuinely unprecedented for a production road car when the Veyron launched in 2005, describe a machine that operates in a different category from everything that preceded it. The standing quarter mile in 10.1 seconds. Zero to 200 mph and back to zero in 27.8 seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The braking is as extraordinary as the acceleration. Carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide composite discs, manufactured by SGL Carbon, combined with AP Racing aluminium alloy monobloc calipers with eight titanium pistons at the front, six at the rear. At speeds above 200 km\/h, the rear wing deploys as an airbrake, snapping to a 55-degree angle in 0.4 seconds to provide an additional 0.68g of deceleration equivalent, Bugatti noted, to the stopping power of an ordinary hatchback. The company claimed the Veyron could brake from 400 km\/h to a standstill in under 10 seconds, covering approximately half a kilometre in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">To reach the car&#8217;s absolute top speed, the driver must insert a special key in a keyhole to the left of the seat. The car runs a checklist. If conditions are met, the rear spoiler retracts, the front air diffusers close, and the ground clearance drops from 12.5 cm to 6.5 cm. Normal driving speed without the key is limited to 343 km\/h.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Super Sport: When 987 Horsepower Was Not Enough<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">In 2010, Bugatti introduced the Veyron Super Sport, a more powerful, more aerodynamically refined version limited to 48 units. Power increased to 1,183 horsepower and torque to 1,106 lb-ft. Top speed, with the electronic limiter deactivated on the five World Record Edition cars, reached 431.072 km\/h, 267.856 mph, making it the fastest production road car in the world at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The record was set on July 4, 2010, at the Ehra-Lessien test track with Guinness World Records representatives present. Test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel made two passes in opposite directions, 265.9 mph and 269.8 mph, with the average constituting the official record. The title had previously been held by the SSC Ultimate Aero TT. The Super Sport took it back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Customer cars were electronically limited to 415 km\/h to protect the tyres from disintegrating at higher speeds, a reminder that the limiting factor in how fast this car could go was not the engine, but what could be built to keep it on the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Grand Sport Vitesse: A Convertible at 254 mph<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">If the coup\u00e9 was a statement about what an engine could do, the Grand Sport Vitesse was a statement about what engineering confidence looks like. An open-top car, a targa-roofed roadster capable of 408.84 km\/h: 254 mph with the roof removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Chinese racing driver Anthony Liu set the open-top production car speed record in a Vitesse at the Ehra-Lessien track in April 2013. His observation afterward was almost understated: &#8220;Even at such high speeds, it remained incredibly comfortable and stable.&#8221; At 254 miles per hour. With no roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">What Top Gear Said <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Bugatti Veyron&#8217;s cultural legacy is inseparable from Top Gear, which gave the car some of the most memorable television it has ever generated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Jeremy Clarkson drove it from northern Italy to London, racing James May and Richard Hammond, who made the same journey by Cessna aircraft. Hammond raced it against a Eurofighter Typhoon and lost. The Super Sport set the fastest ever Top Gear lap in 2010 with a time of 1:16.8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Clarkson&#8217;s final verdict, delivered during Top Gear&#8217;s Car of the Decade award: &#8220;It was a car that just rewrote the rule book, really. An amazing piece of engineering. A genuine Concorde moment.&#8221; James May called it simply &#8220;our Concorde moment,&#8221; a reference to the supersonic passenger aircraft that was similarly extravagant, similarly loss-making, and similarly impossible to dismiss as anything other than a genuine achievement of human ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Even Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1 and initially sceptical, described the Veyron during development as &#8220;the most pointless exercise on the planet,&#8221; but changed his position after driving one. He called it &#8220;a huge achievement&#8221; and praised its styling as a combination of classic curves and mechanical precision that would ensure the car still looked good years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">450 Cars. Ten Years. A Legacy That Outlasted the Successor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Production ran from 2005 to 2015. In total, 450 Veyrons were built across four main variants: 252 standard coup\u00e9s, 58 Grand Sport roadsters, 48 Super Sports, and 92 Grand Sport Vitesses. The final car, a Grand Sport Vitesse titled &#8220;La Finale,&#8221; was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015 with a colour scheme that reversed the original Veyron&#8217;s red and black livery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The successor, the Bugatti Chiron, launched in 2016 with 1,500 horsepower and eventually pushed past 300 mph. It was faster, more powerful, and more technologically advanced in every measurable way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">It has never quite generated the same feeling as the Veyron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">The Veyron arrived at a moment when nobody was sure it was possible, proved that it was, and defined a benchmark that the entire industry spent the following decade trying to meet. That it was built at a deliberate financial loss, as a pure demonstration of engineering capability, only makes it stranger and more remarkable in retrospect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">Volkswagen lost approximately \u00a34 million on every single one they sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-14azzlx-P e1ccqnho0\">It may be the best money they ever spent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s start with the number that makes no sense.
