BERLIN, June 12 (Reuters) – Drugmakers will not be exempted from cost-cutting measures, Germany’s health minister said, after some \u200ccompanies warned they may be unable to launch innovative \u200cmedicines in Europe unless governments agree to pay more than they historically \u200bhave.<\/p>\n
“Every sector must play its part in this reform,” Health Minister Nina Warken was quoted as saying by the Funke newspaper group on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Proposed legislation in Germany will cap rapidly growing \u200ccosts in the statutory \u2060health insurance system.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Warken, a member of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives, says she realises that many \u2060pharmaceutical companies are under pressure, and the planned legislation is not going to bring them any extra revenue.<\/p>\n
\u2022 But “Germany remains an \u200battractive location \u200bfor the pharmaceutical industry \u2013 thanks \u200bto reimbursement under the \u200cstatutory health insurance scheme, and the opportunities available here for clinical trials and the development of new medicines,” Warken was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Exempting the industry from the proposed legislation was out of the question, the minister added.<\/p>\n
\u2022 “Compared to other European \u200ccountries, we have the fastest access \u200bto innovative medicines in Germany,” Warken \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
\u2022 U.S. drugmaker Eli \u200bLilly and its German peer Boehringer Ingelheim have \u200cannounced they would slash planned \u200binvestments in the \u200bEU’s most populous country, citing the government policy proposals.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, in a letter to Merz, has \u200bsaid the U.S. \u200ccompany is reviewing the timing and scope of investments \u200bin Germany.<\/p>\n
