LONDON, June 10 (Reuters) – Bayer (BAYGn.DE), opens new tab<\/a> is hoping to speed up a plan to facilitate North American production of biofuel feedstocks like camelina in the wake of the Iran \u200bwar<\/a>, the drug-making and crop science giant said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The war \u200chas prompted a surge in fossil fuel prices and in turn driven renewed interest in biofuels – typically made from locally grown crops like sugar and corn – as a means to \u200bimprove energy security and potentially cut energy costs.<\/p>\n

Biofuels, which are usually blended \u200binto gasoline or used to replace diesel, become more economical when \u2060fossil fuel prices rise.<\/p>\n

The fossil fuel alternatives have long prompted debate as \u200bto whether burning crops to produce energy will drive up food prices and deforestation \u200brates. That has spurred innovation in second-generation biofuels made from organic materials that don’t compete with foodstuffs.<\/p>\n

Camelina, for example, is an intermediate crop that can be grown between main planting \u200bseasons or on underutilised land.<\/p>\n

“We are targeting a couple of million acres of \u200bcamelina production in North America, and we’re in the process of evaluating expansion in other \u200cgeographies,\u201d \u2060Bayer’s global head of cereals, cotton and canola Peter Muller told Reuters on the sidelines of the International Grains Council conference in London.<\/p>\n

The Germany-based firm announced last month it had formed an alliance with energy major BP (BP.L), opens new tab<\/a> to commercialize camelina \u200bfor producing biodiesel, \u200brenewable diesel and \u2060sustainable aviation fuels.<\/p>\n

Muller said the firm had been hoping to facilitate its targeted acreage of camelina production by the mid-2030s, \u200bbut it is now hoping to meet this target earlier \u200bgiven renewed \u2060interest in the fuels amid the Iran war.<\/p>\n

“Those decisions were taken in a different context… Now it’s about ramping things up even quicker,” he said.<\/p>\n

Muller added that \u2060Bayer was \u200balso about to close on a deal with \u200ba firm that will crush North American camelina, providing farmers entering the space with confidence there \u200bwill be a buyer for their crop.<\/p>\n
