{"id":42360,"date":"2026-06-24T06:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T06:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/42360\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T06:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T06:49:19","slug":"calvin-klein-adidas-and-uniqlo-ads-banned-for-misleading-recycled-claims-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/42360\/","title":{"rendered":"Calvin Klein, Adidas and Uniqlo ads banned for misleading \u2018recycled\u2019 claims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Ads for Calvin Klein, Adidas and Uniqlo have been banned for making misleading claims about the recycled content of their clothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found all three retailers used the word \u201crecycled\u201d to describe their fabric or product composition but did not provide any information explaining the claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Adidas said it believed consumers would interpret its ad for \u201crecycled running shoes\u201d as meaning they contained materials derived from recycled sources.<\/p>\n<p>    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ee627e53518cca5d833337f2b811fe99.jpeg\" alt=\"A Calvin Klein storefront featuring mannequins\" loading=\"eager\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" class=\"yf-lglytj  loaded\"\/> The watchdog said the ads gave the impression that the products were made entirely from recycled materials (Alamy\/PA)      <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">They explained they did not operate a standalone recycled running shoe range, but said certain products across their collections might incorporate recycled materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Calvin Klein said it \u201cwould not be reasonable\u201d for consumers to interpret its ad for \u201cresponsibly sourced collections \u2013 recycled, organic &amp; more\u201d as meaning that all products in the women\u2019s tops range contained, in whole or part, recycled, organic or other \u201cenvironmentally preferred\u201d materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Uniqlo said its ad for women\u2019s fleece coats and jackets mentioning the term \u201crecycled materials\u201d was intended to mean that the polyester content was recycled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">It said the claim did not suggest that every component of the garments, such as the metal zip or the labels, were recycled, but rather the claim referred to the textile materials that made up the fabric of the main body, lining and trim.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==\" alt=\"People walking in front of an Adidas store\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" class=\"yf-lglytj loader\"\/> The rulings form part of a wider project by the ASA investigating environmental claims in the retail fashion sector (Sean Dempsey\/PA)  \u00b7 Sean Dempsey    <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The watchdog said the ads gave the impression that the products were made entirely from recycled materials, but found that none of the three fashion giants could provide evidence that this was the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The ASA ruled that the ads were misleading and ordered that the three brands withdraw them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The rulings form part of a wider project by the ASA investigating environmental claims in the retail fashion sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">They follow the ASA banning ads by Lacoste, Nike and Superdry in December for making misleading environmental claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Miles Lockwood, director of complaints and investigations at the ASA, said: \u201cIt\u2019s important that people can trust the environmental claims they see in ads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cWhen absolute terms like \u2018recycled\u2019 are used, the basis of those claims should be clearly explained and properly supported by evidence.
