A class rookie, Heinrich co-drove to victories in the Rolex 24 and the Sebring 12-hour with Porsche Penske Motorsport teammates Felipe Nasr and Julien Andlauer to open the season. Then came his upset win on board the Miller JDC-Motorsports entry at Laguna Seca, where the young German was spectacular in working traffic to overtake Aitken on the last lap.

But for a rookie mistake on the streets of Detroit, where Aitken and his Action Express Racing V-Series.R team won from the pole, Heinrich might still be leading the points. He enters the fifth of nine rounds of the WeatherTech Championship 144 points behind Aitken, one of his heroes as a youth while driving in lower formula series on his family team. (Aitken is alone at the top of the standings after his co-driver Earl Bamber had a conflicting race in the World Endurance Championship.)

Jake Galstad//Getty Images

Laurin Heinrich during the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April.

Heinrich has acknowledged his error in Detroit, where his cornering line during a battle with Roman De Angelis pinched the driver’s Aston Martin Valkyrie into the wall. A penalty resulted in a last place finish for the No. 5 Porsche, which Heinrich co-drives with Tijmen van der Helm.

Although it looked like a calculated sideswipe, Heinrich said his mistake was not nearly as intentional as it might have appeared.

“Unfortunately, the race in Detroit was not what we had hoped for after our win at Laguna Seca,” he said. “First, we picked up a penalty for a pit stop infringement, and on top of that, I was involved in an on-track incident, which was my mistake, and we received another penalty for that. After falling a couple of laps down, there was little more we could do than finish the race.”

“He brings more than just amazing driving talent. He has a ‘can-do’ attitude in and out of the car.”

In addition to trying to catch Aitken, whose Action Express team has finished on the podium at each race this season, Heinrich will be up against his factory-backed Porsche Penske teammates Nasr and Andlauer, who are only ten points behind him in the standings.

Following the six-hour at the Glen, Heinrich is slated to drive at Road America and Indianapolis with the JDC-Miller team before returning to the Porsche Penske No. 7 entry for the Petit Le Mans season finale. It’s a tall order, but that gives him three chances to catch Aitken while finding an advantage on his teammates at Porsche Penske.

“Laurin has really clicked with our team,” said John Church, who co-owns the No. 5 privateer Mustang Sampling-sponsored Porsche entry with John Miller. “He brings more than just amazing driving talent. He has a ‘can-do’ attitude in and out of the car, which makes the whole team stronger. The remainder of the season is on tracks where we have had success in the past, and having Laurin onboard gives us that much more confidence for the rest of the 2026 season.”

The JDC-Miller team received different Balance of Performance (BoP) parameters at Laguna Seca than the two factory Porsches at Penske, which have new aero updates for 2026. As it turned out, the higher downforce of the 2025-spec Porsche of JDC-Miller worked wonders at the hilly California track, especially in the late stages of the two hour, 40-minute sprint. That’s when Heinrich was able to hunt down the lead Cadillac while diving through traffic. It remains to be seen how well the older bodywork does at the 3.4-mile, 11-turn Glen, also a high-speed, hilly layout.

Brandon Badraoui//Getty Images

JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963 during the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca in May.

In the absence of slicker aero, under the current BoP the Miller-JDC team will carry 15 kilos less weight in the Sunday race and have a boost of 25 more horsepower in Stage 1 compared to the works Porsches. In Stage 2, which is above 150 mph, the older Porsche will have 18 horsepower less.

Heinrich figures his unexpectedly high profile in his first prototype season bodes well in a career where he has already proven himself at the GT level.

He was first signed as a Porsche Junior driver in 2022, when he won the Carrera Cup Germany. His GTD Pro title in 2024 came in the Porsche 911 GT3 R of AO Racing. That’s when Heinrich’s first spectacular comeback drive in IMSA took place during his final stint in the Detroit race.

His current inaugural year as a full works driver led to the seat at JDC-Miller starting at Long Beach, where Porsche initially calculated that he might help take points from Cadillac and other manufacturers. Now Heinrich’s trying to win it all.

“Racing at Watkins Glen is a great opportunity for me to continue my championship fight,” he said.

Thanks to Porsche juggling its scheduling book, the extraordinary rise of 24-year-old GTP sensation Laurin Heinrich will continue…

[21181
21041,37862,15295,15298,21042,8406,37861,37863
post-44092","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-porsche","tag-content-type-news","tag-contentid-55d72f1d-882a-480b-85e9-89e57fefe9a2","tag-displaytype-standard-article","tag-issyndicated-false","tag-locale-us","tag-porsche","tag-shorttitle-imsa-rookie-turning-heads-across-sports-car-racing","tag-subsection-more-racing
["GET
