These days, there is no shortage of people putting in serious time, effort, and attention to detail in order to take old cars and make them\u2026 not old. Near-modern performance packed inside a 60-year-old form factor has been a trend going back decades at this point, but few brand loyalists have taken the idea quite so far as the Porsche community has. While a few names might spring to mind, the latest hot-rod Porsche with no detail spared comes from Tuthill, and it captured my interest because the air-cooled flat-six powering this 1970 911 spins to 11,000 rpm.<\/p>\n

This car first appeared to me on the Porsche Club of America YouTube channel, where PCA executive director Vu Nguyen stops by TPC Racing in Jessup, Maryland, to walk around and examine the finer points of this finely built with shop owner Michael Levitas. Both are knowledgeable enough to point out the non-factory bits on a car specifically built to look factory, and that means a few secrets come to light.<\/p>\n

The Tuthill 911K is akin to many other wild builds that stretch the definition of restoration, modification, and custom. That means that while the silhouette is a 1970 Porsche 911, the car casting that shadow is something else entirely. Case in point is the way its pretty coat of paint hides the fact that most of the bodywork is carbon fiber. Lightweight is a theme of the car, so the carbon fiber is only the start, as the roll cage is titanium, along with many fasteners in the car. All that focus on weight savings gets this car down to a scant 1900 pounds. Those Fuchs wheels? Not Fuchs at all, but more carbon fiber.<\/p>\n

The real beauty in weight savings is the ability to get by with less power. That doesn\u2019t mean the engine compartment is going to be simple and boring, though. The use of exotic materials continues from top to bottom of the air-cooled 3.1-liter mill. The minds behind the engine build were inspired by the feeling of riding a motorcycle, and Levitas, a man with plenty of race-car experience, says this engine combination is \u201cthe closest thing to a race car.\u201d From on top or underneath, the engine is a jewel that was both carefully cut and perfectly set.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to take their word on performance, though. The pair climb in and go for a drive, and while there are some entertaining bits to that outing, it does take place on public roads. Which means the capabilities and fun parts of driving an 11,000-rpm sports car are difficult to access while navigating traffic. Luckily for all of us, Chris Harris drove a Tuthill 911K back in 2023<\/a> on track and used all of the tachometer. Watching Harris reach for the shifter before catching himself and letting the engine pull longer shows just how much different this screaming flat-six is compared to a stock one.<\/p>\n

Is it over the top? Absolutely. At least, if the top is 10,000. I think a lot of fun can be had with a lot less, but this car is a wild example of what is possible and can be achieved when a goal is set and skilled people go about building something to meet it.<\/p>\n
