\n HAMBURG\/ROSTOCK (dpa-AFX) – The German federal government is likely to fall short of its 2030 expansion targets for offshore wind power in the North and Baltic Seas. This assessment was issued by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), Germany’s central maritime authority based in Hamburg and Rostock.<\/p>\n
“In fact, it appears likely that we will not have reached the required 30 gigawatts by the end of 2030,” said Kai Tr\u00fcmpler, head of the spatial planning sub-department at the BSH. He noted that it was already clear when the expansion targets were formulated that they were highly ambitious.<\/p>\n
Tr\u00fcmpler expects the expansion target to be met with a delay, likely in 2031 or 2032. “I must say, I would still consider that a truly remarkable achievement by the German government and administration to manage this within such a short timeframe,” he added.<\/p>\n
The government’s statutory objective is to increase offshore wind power generation capacity to at least 30 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. Since the commissioning of Germany’s first offshore wind farm in 2010, total installed capacity has risen to 10.2 GW, according to the BSH.<\/p>\n
2035 expansion target expected to be met ahead of schedule<\/p>\n
The government is targeting a capacity of 40 GW by 2035 and 70 GW by 2045. The BSH anticipates that the 2035 target will be exceeded as early as 2034, reaching approximately 42 GW.<\/p>\n
Industry associations had publicly voiced concerns earlier this year that the 2030 expansion target would be missed. The associations cited delays in grid connections and a lack of corporate interest in tender areas as the primary reasons.<\/p>\n
The BSH is responsible for planning the locations of offshore wind farms in the North and Baltic Seas.
