He was named the 2026 Bundesliga Best Young Player.

The 6-foot-3 Kayil said after the draft that his plan was to stay in the United States and play for the Knicks next season. However, with the Knicks facing a financial crunch, the organization may elect to stash him in Germany for one more year.

Kayil was highly touted entering the draft this year because of his versatility and ability to play either guard position. He is a crafty scorer who can get into the paint and finish or pull up in the mid-range or beyond the arc, with a smooth step-back shot.

The 20-year-old has also represented Germany at the international level, including two events with the senior team. He most recently competed in the second window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup European qualifiers, averaging 11.3 points and five assists in four appearances.

Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!

The Knicks were ecstatic to draft Kayil and believe he has a bright future ahead.
