More than 25 years after its debut, BMW has revealed the all-new fifth-generation 2027 X5, bringing the brand’s Neue Klasse philosophy to one of its most important models.

2027 BMW iX5 60

Unveiled at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing facility—the company’s largest production plant anywhere in the world—the new X5 arrives with fresh styling, advanced technology, greater electrification, and a significantly more digital driving experience.

North America will initially receive three powertrains, beginning with the mild-hybrid X5 xDrive40, expected to arrive first in Canada with pricing starting at $95,500.

Power comes from a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 394 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.

Standard suspension features steel springs with adaptive dampers, while air suspension, active roll stabilization, and rear-wheel steering remain available options. Buyers choosing the M Sport Package receive more aggressive styling, Adaptive M Suspension, unique wheels, and M Sport brakes with dark blue metallic calipers.

2027 BMW iX5 60

Joining the lineup later will be the X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. While Canadian pricing and availability have yet to be announced, the model pairs a more powerful version of BMW’s turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a 197-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission.

Combined output climbs to 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while its 26-kWh battery is expected to deliver up to 100 kilometres of electric-only driving. Air suspension comes standard, and both the xDrive40 and xDrive50e utilize 400-volt electrical architecture.

At the top of the range sits BMW’s first fully electric X5, the iX5 xDrive60. Replacing today’s iX as BMW’s flagship electric SUV, it introduces sixth-generation eDrive technology and a massive 141-kWh usable battery—the largest ever fitted to a BMW production vehicle.

BMW estimates a driving range of up to 700 kilometres. Built on an 800-volt architecture, the iX5 supports charging speeds of up to 460 kW, allowing as much as 270 kilometres of range to be added in approximately 10 minutes under ideal conditions.

2027 BMW iX5 60

Visually, the new X5 is lower and longer than its predecessor while maintaining the upright proportions that have defined the model for decades. A bold front fascia is highlighted by BMW’s new double-“X” headlight signature and illuminated vertical kidney grille, creating a look that is unmistakable in any rearview mirror.

The body sides remain clean thanks to slim gloss-black haptic door handles integrated into the B- and C-pillars, while the rear lighting echoes the front-end’s distinctive double-X theme.

Inside, BMW has taken a dramatic step forward. The cabin feels more sculptural than previous generations, highlighted by an illuminated accent strip stretching across the dashboard and premium materials throughout.

Rather than one continuous curved display, the dashboard now separates the digital driver display, the 17.9-inch central touchscreen, and an optional passenger display into distinct elements that add visual depth.

2027 BMW iX5 60

Drivers are greeted by an all-new steering wheel design that eliminates traditional horizontal spokes while remaining comfortable in hand.

The familiar iDrive rotary controller has officially been retired. In its place is the latest generation of BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by BMW Operating System X. Its centrepiece is Panoramic Vision, which projects customizable information across the full width of the lower windshield. Key driving information appears directly in front of the driver, while the centre and passenger-side sections can display navigation, entertainment, and vehicle information.

Voice control has also evolved. The enhanced “Hey BMW” assistant continues to learn driver preferences while providing natural access to virtually every vehicle function.

2027 BMW iX5 60

Few vehicles carry as much weight within BMW’s global lineup as the X5.
