NEW BERLIN \u2014 The New Berlin Plan Commission was met with groans on Wednesday night as it made the decision to recommend approvals for a proposed massive manufacturing facility on West Grange Avenue.<\/p>\n

Rockwell Automation\u2019s planned 810,000-square-foot manufacturing plant along the south side of the 14000 block of West Grange Avenue has been a subject of controversy among New Berlin residents for the past several months. Residents, many of whom live in neighborhoods that the proposed facility would border, were once again in attendance and spoke out at the Plan Commission meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

They watched as the Plan Commission unanimously recommended approvals for Rockwell\u2019s rezoning\/planned unit development, comprehensive plan amendment and land division requests.<\/p>\n

The proposal is now in the hands of the New Berlin Common Council, which will review and possibly take action on the aforementioned land-use requests at its meeting on July 28. Should Rockwell receive approval at that point, the Plan Commission would then review Rockwell\u2019s use, site and architectural approval application on Aug. 19.<\/p>\n

Concerns from residents have included noise and light pollution, power consumption and increased truck traffic in the area. Several residents who spoke on Wednesday as well as at the previous Plan Commission meeting on June 1 said they were under the impression the area would remain residential, which is what attracted them to those neighborhoods in the first place. “I\u2019m asking you to remember that this isn\u2019t just acreage on a map,” said Emily Feldmann, who also spoke at the June 1 meeting and sent a letter of opposition to the city. “It is our homes, our neighborhood, our children\u2019s community, and a place that we have expected to spend decades of our lives. A good company can still be wrong project in the wrong place.”<\/p>\n

Kyle Lindberg, vice president of supply chain strategy and planning at Rockwell, said he appreciated residents\u2019 feedback regarding the project. He emphasized that Rockwell has adjusted its plans based on that feedback.<\/p>\n

Lindberg addressed several of those concerns, including the height of the proposed building. As part of its initial PUD request, Rockwell had asked for the maximum building height to be raised to 60 feet. After hearing from concerned residents in June, it removed the language about the height from the PUD and will abide by the current code that allows for a maximum height of 45 feet.<\/p>\n

Lindberg also responded to residents\u2019 concerns about increased traffic in the area, namely truck traffic. He said Rockwell will route its traffic south onto Moorland Road to avoid residential areas as much as possible.<\/p>\n
