In ALDI SÜD’s home market—over 2,000 stores deep in one of Europe’s most crowded retail landscapes—site selection is treated like an intelligence problem, not a gut instinct. Each new location is a high-stakes decision.

German shoppers tend to bundle errands, often on foot. Stores near natural walking paths or close to other shops people already visit have an edge.

But here’s the real challenge. Cities have little open land. Zoning rules, sustainability requirements, and design limits narrow the options further. Rural areas often lack the steady demand a new store needs. Growth depends on matching customer habits, access, and site limits.

Disciplined site selection means picking sites that are easy to run, work well for shoppers nearby, and won’t steal sales from other stores.

Powerful maps and location analysis help ALDI SÜD see who lives nearby and how people move through an area. Layers of data on traffic, site access, and nearby competitors give planners a clear, street-level view of each neighborhood.

“Data-driven analyses continuously open up new possibilities to make our locations more intelligent, attractive, and sustainable,” said Kai Benzing, ALDI SÜD’s Manager for Store Network Analytics.

Mapping purchase and loyalty data reveals the catchment area around each store. Combined with population patterns, this predicts sales potential even for unusual sites.

Sustainability factors into every decision. German shoppers expect grocery stores to blend into their neighborhoods, not stand out. ALDI SÜD uses maps to test design choices before building. Adding EV charging stations, adding green space, or changing building materials can all affect sales and neighbor approval.

In tight city spaces, good locations often need custom layouts. Planners often adapt floorplans to fit odd-shaped lots, mixed-use buildings, and tight spaces such as low ceilings or shared entrances. Through it all, they keep ALDI’s lean store model intact.

“Our store concepts are always tailored to local conditions and needs,” said Nils Reithmann, Director of Portfolio Management and Cooperation. “We gain early insights into areas with strong growth potential.”

THE SAME LOGIC APPLIES FAR BEYOND GROCERY. In many industries, the cost of not having location insights can be measured in liability, failed service level agreements, and capital written off.

A leading global hotel company, for instance, builds maps to protect guests, associates, and assets for its 9,000 hotels in more than 140 countries. When a nearby security event or natural disaster threatens, its leaders turn to the company’s Global Safety and Security Risk Atlas to decide what to do next. The questions become immediate and operational: Which locations are affected? Where should guests and staff evacuate to? Where can resources and supplies be delivered?

Answering those questions slowly – or not at all – creates direct liability. The same maps that guide evacuation decisions also track environmental risks: flooding, heat waves, coastal erosion. Leaders can see exactly which properties sit in a hurricane’s path, or which guests and staff might be hit by an expanding heat dome. That’s risk intelligence that standard tools can’t give.

A global IT company makes real-time maps to manage a service supply chain for data centers and server rooms spread across more than 130 countries. Operations managers must resolve an issue within hours of a customer’s request–a contractual obligation.

Maps give them that visibility. “I know where my customers are, where my warehouses are, and where my inventory is,” said a manager overseeing network design and sustainability in the company’s supply chain and logistics division. That location awareness lets the service team coordinate thousands of engineers, parts, and warehouses. It keeps systems running exactly when and where needed.

ALDI’S EDGE IN GROCERY, the hotel company’s risk posture, the IT company’s service reliability aren’t three separate stories. They’re the same story: companies that treat location as a strategic data layer make faster, sharper decisions than those that don’t. The ones that don’t are missing a key piece of their business intelligence.

For leaders looking for untapped analytical leverage, location is a good place to start. The data most companies hold–on customers, operations, assets, and risks–becomes far more actionable once you can see it in space.

For most industries, the question is no longer whether location intelligence applies, it’s who’s already using it.

Discover how mapping technology helps organizations make smarter business decisions with the Power of Where.

ALDI SÜD uses maps to test design choices before building.
