Gretchen Whitmer spent $209,604 on nine days of travel to Germany and Italy in February, according to documents obtained through a records request.<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer stayed in Germany Feb. 11 to 15, then spent Feb. 15-20 in Italy, where she attended the Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Capitol Confidential obtained the documents from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation through a records request. On average, Whitmer\u2019s entourage spent more than $23,000 every day.<\/p>\n<p>The Detroit News first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/17\/governor-gretchen-whitmer-olympics-visit-european-trade-trip-cost-over-200k-milan-munich\/89191918007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> the trip\u2019s cost but didn\u2019t release documents.<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer spent $113,317 on her Germany trip. She brought 11 people. Five were from the Michigan State Police. The others were Paul D. Rogers, the adjutant general of the Michigan National Guard; JoAnne Huls, Whitmer\u2019s chief of staff; Zack Pohl, the deputy chief of staff; John Gutierrez, the director of Michigan\u2019s Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation; and Vltako Tomic-Bobas, investment director of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of the expenses by category:<\/p>\n<p>Transportation: $49,710.57<\/p>\n<p>Airfare: $36,710.57<\/p>\n<p>Hotels: $20,052.46<\/p>\n<p>Airport fees and services $3,838.17<\/p>\n<p>Meals: $3,500.06.<\/p>\n<p>Travelers stayed at Le Meridien Hotel in Munich. They ate at Irmi Restaurant. Whitmer spoke on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/program\/international-telecasts\/munich-security-conference-foreign-policy-discussion-with-rep-ocasio-cortez-michigan-gov-whitmer-and-others\/673435\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">panel<\/a> titled \u201cBreaking (with) the past &#8211; Seismic Shifts in U.S. Foreign Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trips aimed to attract foreign investment to Michigan,\u00a0Danielle Emerson, MEDC public relations manager, told CapCon in an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value of the investment missions to Germany and Italy were highlighted in the press releases sent out: The opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbusiness.org\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/economic-mission-to-germany\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a>, which highlights an investment by RENK, the value of Germany as Michigan\u2019s 4th largest international investor, and touting Michigan\u2019s defense industry and capabilities with influential leaders at the Munich Security Conference; the second one, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbusiness.org\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/whitmer-investment-mission-italy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discusses relationship-building with existing companies<\/a> like ItalDesign, as well as attracting businesses; and the concluding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbusiness.org\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/investment-mission-to-germany-and-italy-concludes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>, which highlights all the companies visited, as well as strategic partners like Fincantieri, which partners with the University of Michigan\u2019s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program \u2013 the only of its kind in the nation.
