Between July 2025 and May 2026, Germany imported 714 tons of Moroccan palm dates worth more than €4.2 million. This figure is 22 times higher than the total shipments of the 2024/25 season and more than six times the combined exports of the previous five years.

At first glance, the situation may seem paradoxical: Morocco ranks among the top three global importers of palm dates, yet it is simultaneously accelerating exports to Germany and other EU destinations. The explanation lies in product segmentation. Morocco imports large volumes of lower‑priced dates from Egypt, Tunisia, the UAE, and Algeria to satisfy domestic demand, while its export breakthrough in Europe is built almost entirely on one premium variety — Medjool, often referred to as the “king of dates.”

The Medjool has deep roots in Morocco’s Tafilalet region, where it originated before nearly disappearing in the early 20th century due to palm disease. Surviving seedlings were transplanted to California, from where the variety spread globally, including to Israel and Jordan. Morocco is now working to reclaim its position as a leading producer of the original Medjool, and Germany has become one of the most important European markets for premium palm dates. German importers position Moroccan Medjool alongside Israeli product in the high‑end segment, catering to consumers willing to pay for quality.

Germany’s palm date market is traditionally supplied by Tunisia, which dominates the mid‑range with Deglet Noor, Israel, which competes in the premium segment with Medjool, and Pakistan, which provides the budget Aseel variety. Together, these three countries account for around 70% of Germany’s imports, with additional volumes arriving from Iran, the UAE, Algeria, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Morocco’s breakthrough this season gives it a realistic chance of entering the top ten suppliers for the first time.

This achievement highlights Germany’s growing importance as a destination for Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports. Alongside palm dates, Morocco has quadrupled orange shipments to Germany this season, surpassed 50,000 tons of sweet pepper exports, and is on track to set a new record in cucumber exports. Together, these developments underscore Morocco’s strategic shift toward Northern European markets and its ambition to establish itself as a key supplier across multiple product categories.

     EastFruit

The use of the site materials is free if there is a direct and open for search engines hyperlink to a specific publication of the East-Fruit.com website.

Morocco has sharply expanded its footprint in Germany’s palm date market, despite being one of the world’s largest…

[2
46576,4259,5,8692
post-59729","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-germany","tag-dates","tag-exports","tag-germany","tag-morocco
["GET
