Georgia’s newly appointed ambassador to Germany, Aleksandre Kartozia, has formally taken up his post after presenting his credentials to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, amid efforts by Tbilisi to improve strained bilateral relations. <\/p>\n
Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said Kartozia officially assumed his duties following the credentials ceremony in Berlin, News.Az<\/a> report, citing News Georgia<\/a>.<\/p>\n Although Kartozia was appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in September 2025, the presentation of his credentials took place almost a year later against the backdrop of a prolonged downturn in relations between Tbilisi and Berlin.<\/p>\n Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze described the start of the new ambassador’s mission as an opportunity to “reset” bilateral ties.<\/p>\n “We are particularly interested in resetting relations with Germany. We hope that the presentation of credentials by our ambassador and the appointment of a new German ambassador to Tbilisi will help return our relations to a positive trajectory,” Kobakhidze said.<\/p>\n He noted that Germany had been one of Georgia’s most important partners since the 1990s and had made a significant contribution to the country’s development.<\/p>\n At the same time, Kobakhidze blamed former German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer for the deterioration in relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n “The former ambassador made a very negative contribution to Georgian-German relations,” he said.<\/p>\n
