HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540), the intermediate shipbuilding holding company of HD Hyundai (267250), is partnering with U.S. engineering firm Siemens to build an artificial intelligence (AI)-based future shipyard.<\/p>\n

HD Korea Shipbuilding said on the 24th that it had signed a final contract with Siemens Digital Industries Software to introduce a “next-generation marine platform” at the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center (KUSPC) held in Washington, D.C., on the 23rd.<\/p>\n

The core of the next-generation marine platform is to use AI and digital technologies to integrate the entire process\u2014from ship design to production, supply chain management, quality control, and maintenance\u2014into single data based on a three-dimensional (3D) model, enabling the same information to be used at every stage.<\/p>\n

Through this, the shipyard can transmit design changes and current process conditions in real time to the production site and supply chain, and make optimal decisions to prevent schedule delays and quality issues. HD Korea Shipbuilding plans to implement a “virtual shipyard” identical to the actual shipyard site to simulate real work processes and equipment operations.<\/p>\n

HD Korea Shipbuilding aims to realize a future “physical AI shipyard” in which robots and autonomous production facilities carry out tasks on their own. Since learning and analysis capabilities are essential for this, the company plans to advance the next-generation marine platform to build an autonomous manufacturing system in which the entire ship construction process is connected in a digital environment.<\/p>\n

Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens, said, “We plan to combine Siemens’ industrial AI and digital twin technologies with HD Hyundai’s excellent shipbuilding operational capabilities to build a standard blueprint for innovation in the shipbuilding industry.” He added, “Through this cooperation, we will maximize ship productivity, quality, and work productivity, while also greatly contributing to strengthening global shipbuilding competitiveness.”<\/p>\n

Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding, stressed, “AI is not simply a tool to increase productivity but an innovative technology that redefines the very way the shipbuilding industry operates.” He added, “We will build a future smart shipyard combining AI and digital technologies to create a new standard for the shipbuilding industry.”<\/p>\n

The event was attended by Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, as well as CEO Kim, CEO Hemmelgarn, and other executives and officials from both companies.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, since Chairman Chung Ki-sun took office in October last year, HD Hyundai has elevated its dedicated AI organization, which oversees the group’s AI technology development, to report directly to the CEO, accelerating efforts to secure core technologies.
