Revenue guidance for the current financial year was also cut – from growth of up to 3% to a forecast of a decline of up to 3%.

The environment for the automotive industry remains extraordinarily challenging: geopolitics, trade tensions, stringent regulatory requirements, volatile markets, and intensified competition.

– Oliver Blume

Shares of Volkswagen Group, which also owns Škoda and Audi, have fallen more than 30% over the last 12 months, and at the start of the trading session were down nearly 2% as of local time.

The German manufacturer plans a major restructuring and a cost-cutting program in response to rising competition from Chinese electric-vehicle makers and high tariffs on exports to the United States.

In a memo to employees earlier this month, Blume described the program as “the most comprehensive retooling in the company’s history” and noted that U.S. tariffs alone cost Volkswagen at least €5 billion a year (about $5.7 billion).

Volkswagen employs about 650,000 people worldwide and has already announced a plan to cut 50,000 jobs in Germany by 2030. In a July memo, Blume said the company was considering cutting another 50,000 positions worldwide and closing four plants in Germany.

“The number of employees has grown over the decades to a scale that is no longer sustainable,” Blume wrote.

IG Metall, Germany’s largest trade union, vowed to fight job cuts, saying any such decision would violate the 2024 Volkswagen agreement, which bans plant closures and compulsory layoffs.

Thousands of workers will learn of their own threatened future from newspaper reports, while no one inside the company has been informed.

– Jan Mentrup

Analysts point to the need for serious changes if VW is truly going to compete with Chinese EV manufacturers, which typically have lower labor costs.

This is an extraordinarily volatile time, and there is no such thing as “too big to fail” right now.

– Mark Hogan

Outlook and response to global competition

Against the backdrop of growing competition from Chinese electric-vehicle brands, VW faces the need for radical changes in costs and structure. Analysts emphasize that without substantial transformation, the release of new models and reductions in labor costs will remain key challenges to maintaining competitiveness in global markets.

Looking ahead for the company

VW’s stock remains under pressure, and the company continues to explore various restructuring and cost-optimization scenarios in response to global trade challenges and regulatory constraints. Management is expected to continue communicating with employees and investors to ensure a smooth transition into a new phase of development.

In summary, Volkswagen is seeking a balance between ambitions to grow on the global stage and the need to cut costs, including through staff reductions and potential plant closures. In the face of rising competition from Chinese manufacturers and tariff pressures, the company must find a path to more sustainable liquidity and long‑term competitive strength.

A dramatic restructuring could reshape Volkswagen’s workforce and factories as management weighs mass layoffs and plant closures to…

[20947
47055,5767,42,47056,42419,5356,47054
post-60723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-volkswagen","tag-ev-competition","tag-job-cuts","tag-news","tag-q2-operating-profit","tag-restructuring-plan","tag-volkswagen","tag-volkswagen-job-cuts-q2-operating-profit-ev-competition-restructuring-plan
["GET
