One person has died and at least 16 more have been injured after a car drove into a crowd during Berlin’s LGBTQ+ parade<\/a> on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Berlin fire brigade said that three of the victims were in life-threatening condition, while eight were in serious condition, per Sky News.<\/p>\n

A suspect in the Berlin attack was identified in the early hours of Sunday morning as a member of the city\u2019s \u201cIslamist scene\u201d, according to police.<\/p>\n

The suspect has not yet been arrested, a spokesperson for Berlin police told reporters at the scene on Sunday morning, per Reuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have now identified a suspected perpetrator. Measures against this suspected perpetrator, who has not yet been arrested, are underway. However, this suspected perpetrator is known to the police as a member of the Islamist scene here in Berlin,” said the spokesperson.<\/p>\n

According to police, a car had driven into the Tiergarten park, near the route of the pride march, hitting several people.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of people had come to Berlin on Saturday to celebrate at Berlin\u2019s pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day. It\u2019s one of Europe\u2019s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations.<\/p>\n

“According to our latest information, the vehicle drove into the Tiergarten around 10pm (8pmGMT), injuring several people in the process, and then came to a standstill after hitting a tree here in the Tiergarten,” a police spokesperson at the scene said. <\/p>\n

“It was empty, which is why we are currently working intensively to track down the perpetrator or perpetrators.” <\/p>\n

The event commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York and combines a parade with political demands for equality, inclusion and protection against discrimination. <\/p>\n

First held in West Berlin in \u200b1979, the CSD has grown from a small demonstration \u200cinto a major fixture of \u2060the city’s cultural and political calendar. <\/p>\n

The parade is the centrepiece \u2060of the CSD, but it is accompanied by a wide range of political, cultural and \u200cparty events held across \u200bthe city.<\/p>\n
