Police in Hamburg are planning enhanced security measures for Pride events in the northern German city this weekend after the fatal attack in Berlin.<\/p>\n
A police spokesman said on Monday that the forces were increasing the number of officers who are to be deployed for the main Pride demonstration in Hamburg on Saturday, without giving specific figures.<\/p>\n
“Whether before, during or after the demonstration, we will have a strong presence and be approachable for participants,” he said.<\/p>\n
According to the police, organizers are expecting 250,000 participants at the demonstration in Hamburg, which is part of the city’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) events, the name used for Pride in Germany.<\/p>\n
The police spokesman said that while there is no specific threat intelligence regarding Hamburg’s CSD events, Germany faces a generally high threat level and the security authorities are therefore remaining vigilant.<\/p>\n
Police would rely on their tried-and-tested operation plan, including route security and barriers to prevent vehicles from ploughing into crowds.<\/p>\n
“The police stand firmly alongside the queer community and are doing their part to ensure that the CSD and all Pride Week events can take place safely,” the spokesman added.<\/p>\n
One woman was killed and 29 other people injured during a suspected Islamist attack on CSD celebrations in Berlin on Saturday.
