Uniper has appointed SLB Capturi as the preferred technology licensor for carbon capture at its proposed Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power (CQLCP) project at Deeside in the UK. <\/p>\n
The decision follows the completion of a competitive front-end engineering and design process, which commenced in December 2024. <\/p>\n
The CQLCP project is set to employ SLB Capturi’s Big Catch technology, an amine-based carbon capture solution developed for extensive, flexible power generation applications. <\/p>\n
The system has been configured to operate efficiently alongside gas turbines at the site, aiming to address fluctuating electricity demand and the intermittent nature of renewable generation. <\/p>\n
SLB Capturi CEO Guillaume Verhaeghe said: “This project represents an important opportunity to apply SLB Capturi carbon capture technology at scale in power generation. <\/p>\n
“Our solution has been configured to support flexible operation of the gas turbines while capturing carbon dioxide efficiently. We look forward to supporting Uniper as the project progresses.” <\/p>\n
SLB Capturi’s configuration for CQLCP features specialised anti-mist and energy saver systems, targeting low atmospheric emissions and high energy efficiency. <\/p>\n
According to the company, the enhancements are supported by process technologies and a solvent range refined through thousands of hours of commercial testing and engineering studies since 2008. <\/p>\n
Currently, eight of SLB Capturi’s plants worldwide are either operating or under delivery. <\/p>\n
The company has over five years of experience collaborating with Siemens Energy and other gas turbine manufacturers. <\/p>\n
If Uniper’s CQLCP project proceeds to a final investment decision and subsequent contract awards for engineering, procurement and construction, it will mark SLB Capturi’s first major deployment in large-scale gas-fired power generation. <\/p>\n
Previously, the company’s installations have focused on sectors such as cement, bioenergy and waste-to-energy. <\/p>\n
SLB Capturi currently has more than 30 projects at various stages, including advanced development and operation. <\/p>\n
The planned facility would be constructed next to the existing Uniper power station, with captured CO\u2082 piped to local infrastructure being developed as part of the HyNet industrial cluster. <\/p>\n
The captured carbon dioxide would be transported for permanent storage in repurposed offshore gas fields. <\/p>\n
Uniper is targeting a potential generating capacity of up to 1.38GW from the new project, to be delivered in two phases. <\/p>\n
Once the first phase is complete, the station will generate enough electricity each year to power about 1.1 million homes. <\/p>\n
Engineering for the project involved SLB Capturi, Worley and Siemens Energy. Should the project advance, SLB Capturi’s role is expected to cover technology licensing, proprietary equipment supply, project management, and assistance with final construction and commissioning. <\/p>\n
The development remains subject to planning consents, with a decision on the Development Consent Order anticipated in the coming months and an initial phase potentially operational from 2030. <\/p>\n
