When I was a kid working summers on my grandfather\u2019s farm, I helped him replace rotten wood posts along a mile or so of barbed-wire fencing. Grandpa Bud would squint through the scope of his (empty, I\u2019m sure) .22-caliber rifle and wave one hand or the other to indicate which way I should tip the post.<\/p>\n

There was something about knowing I was under the gun\u2014literally\u2014that instilled in me the importance of making sure my work was dead level. These days, whether I\u2019m installing a deck or hanging a gallery wall, I find deep satisfaction in setting every workpiece perfectly straight. And for that, a good laser level<\/a> is an invaluable tool in my arsenal.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, the best choice for most folks tackling DIY projects is the Bosch GLL50-20G<\/a> cross-line green-beam laser level. Its outstanding visibility\u2014thanks to a green beam, not a red one, which is much easier to see\u2014coupled with thoughtful design and impressively small weight sets it apart from most of its competitors.<\/p>\n

The Best Laser Level We RecommendBuilt with Usability in Mind<\/p>\n

Full disclosure: I\u2019m biased toward good design and I own several Bosch tools already, including the 12-volt cordless drill<\/a> I recommend to anyone who asks (and many who don\u2019t) and a laser measurer<\/a> that has saved me on multiple remodeling projects.<\/p>\n

Admirably compact, the GLL50-20G is about the size, shape, and heft of a large tape measure. The contours nest nicely in the hand, allowing for a comfortable, open-fingered grip. A dense, rubberized roll cage cushions corners to protect the laser mechanism from getting jolted out of alignment when you drop it.<\/p>\n

Bosch rates this model IP55 for dust and water resistance, which is a notch above the IP54 rating earned by most of the other review models, including the premium DeWalt 20V Max XR Remote Control 360-Degree Line Laser Kit<\/a> that costs nearly 10 times the price. The red slide switch features a prominent tab that makes it easy to snap between on and off positions, even if you\u2019re wearing gloves. Switching it off locks the laser\u2019s self-leveling pendulum in place.<\/p>\n

The laser body pivots on an L-shaped bracket with three mounting features. You can thread it onto a tripod, stick the magnetic ribs to a metal stud, or slot it onto a pan-head screw. The bracket doubles as a protective cover for the laser window when you spin the body toward its upper leg, snapping into place with the satisfying click of a fidget toy.<\/p>\n

Balancing Accuracy and Visibility <\/p>\n

Any level is only as good as its calibration. The Bosch claims an accuracy rating of +\/- 1\/4-inch over 30 feet. This is half as precise as the most accurate models we\u2019ve tested, including the Bosch GPL100-50G Self-Leveling Alignment Laser<\/a>, which come within +\/- 1\/8-inch of perfection over the same distance (but costs twice as much).<\/p>\n

Those specs are claimed under factory conditions, however, and therefore don\u2019t account for your new level getting tossed around during shipping. So the first thing you should do with any new laser level is check its accuracy. The Bosch manual does a good job of explaining how to conduct an industry-standard A\/B test, and when I did, I found my review model to be damn near close to what it claimed.<\/p>\n

All that said, the fact remains this level is less accurate than many others like it, but because this accuracy rating applies to a pretty large distance, it\u2019s worth considering just how important this will be. There will be a lot of applications where you\u2019re simply not using the level from 30 feet away, which is where the beam\u2019s inaccuracy pushes closer to being off the full 1\/4 inch. Working closer than that means your inaccuracies are barely perceptible. That was the case for me when I used this level to hang a wall gallery (more on that below).<\/p>\n

Choosing a laser level, or really any tool, also means deciding what trade-offs are acceptable. Does that fraction of accuracy at a distance matter more to you than ease of use? If the latter is more important, the Bosch\u2019s green beam does a lot of heavy lifting here. Bosch claims green is up to four times as visible as the more common red beams. I can\u2019t really quantify it like that myself, but I will say it\u2019s difficult to describe how much better a green laser is than red: crisp, clear, sharp. You don\u2019t get that feeling when staring at a red laser level line.<\/p>\n

A Framing Project Made Easier<\/p>\n

The Bosch arrived at my house, and I intended to use it to hang a series of frames on my living room wall\u2014a half dozen 2-by-2-foot frames to be specific. \u201cAll\u201d I needed to do was string them with wire, attach the hooks and cables to the picture rail, and get all six frames plumb and level. The level made the last step the easiest one.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no accounting for how much easier to read a green laser level beam is compared to a red one.<\/p>\n

I picked up a Bosch tripod to steady the level at the height I wanted. The gallery hardware consists of S-shaped hooks, wire cables, and adjustable cams that catch the frame\u2019s hanging wire. My layout was two rows and three columns, which would allow me to use one pair of cables for the two frames in each column (though I\u2019d need two cams for each frame).<\/p>\n

Once the level was switched on, I aimed the bright green cross to delineate where to place the bottom left corner of the first frame. Once it was set, I swiveled the laser a few inches to the right for the next frame, and so on, effortlessly jumping the layout ahead of my progress. For the second row, I simply lowered the neck of the tripod and repeated the process, which in total took about 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

I checked each frame with my beloved torpedo level. Absolute perfection. So, so satisfying. (Now I just need to figure out what to put in the frames.)<\/p>\n

The Verdict<\/p>\n

There\u2019s so much to like about this Bosch cross-line laser level. A big factor for me is simply its design: Whereas the Bosch 18V 360-Degree Three-Plane Laser Level<\/a> and other models feel like equipment\u2014weighing in at 4.2 pounds with the battery, not to mention the charger and hard case\u2014the GLL50-20G is a tool. It weighs well under a pound. You can toss it in a tool bag and, thanks to its protective design, not worry about it.<\/p>\n

The Skil 360-Degree Red Self-Leveling Cross Line Laser Level<\/a> is a similar size, and the best value at a similar price because it includes a tripod. But it doesn\u2019t feel as robust, and its red laser is a big trade-off. If you make a living dropping tools off a ladder and need to prioritize sheer durability, the DeWalt DW088K Cross-Line Laser Level<\/a> is a great pick for the price. Though, again, it projects a red laser, which is less visible to the human eye.<\/p>\n

If you see yourself needing a 360-degree laser to, say, run chair rail around all four walls of a room or build a tile pattern out evenly from a center point, turn to the Huepar 3D Green Beam Self-Leveling Laser<\/a>. It will cover more ground with more precision than our overall pick, but it\u2019s definitely overkill for those who simply need to hang an occasional frame or shelf.<\/p>\n

Taken all together, a theme emerges: The Bosch is cheaper than the pro-tier models, lighter and more portable than the Huepar and the DeWalt picks, brighter than its many red-laser competitors, but half as accurate on paper as the best of them. I think that\u2019s okay. It\u2019s not something you\u2019ll miss in practice, and it\u2019s not something you\u2019ll likely notice when it comes to your finished product.<\/p>\n
