However, this bill would take restrictions a step further by banning vehicles built by manufacturers that are more than 15 percent owned by China and other adversaries, including German luxury car company Mercedes-Benz, which has two Chinese shareholders\u2014one state-owned\u2014who both hold stakes under 10 percent. If Mercedes is barred from being sold or manufactured stateside, American consumers and the 5,800 workers the company employs at its Alabama plant would be at a loss.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Mercedes-Benz would have legal avenues to appeal as the bill creates a formal authorization and waiver process. This would be similar to the one that Swedish luxury car brand Volvo\u2014whose majority stakeholder is the Chinese company Geely\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvocars.com\/intl\/media\/press-releases\/529D5DA7B9332A2C\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:received%20in%20May;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;received in May&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">received in May<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">While tackling foreign espionage may sound like a good idea, for all the fearmongering about Chinese vehicles\u2014including from Sen. Bernie Moreno (R\u2013Ohio), another cosponsor, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/us\/diplomacy\/article\/3361651\/us-senators-clash-over-scope-chinese-connected-vehicle-ban\" data-ylk=\"slk:called;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;called&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">called<\/a> Chinese cars &#8220;automotive fentanyl&#8221;\u2014there is little evidence a coordinated, state-directed Chinese espionage campaign via cars is underway.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">And even in rare cases of susceptibility, companies have readily addressed the problem. In 2025, researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/mercedes-benz-head-unit-security-research\/115218\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:flagged;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;flagged&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">flagged<\/a> 13 software vulnerabilities in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Sen. Ted Cruz (R\u2013Texas) may have provided the answer in the recent bill markup, when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/china-ownership-sales-mercedes\" data-ylk=\"slk:called;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;called&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">called<\/a> it &#8220;a very direct shot to inflict pain&#8221; on Mercedes for rejecting unionization efforts at its Alabama plant. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slotkin.senate.gov\/2026\/07\/22\/slotkin-moreno-bill-to-protect-national-economic-security-from-chinese-vehicles-advances-unanimously\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:press%20release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;press release&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">press release<\/a> celebrating the bill&#8217;s passage out of committee, Slotkin accused the Chinese Communist Party of &#8220;subsidizing their product and underselling the competition&#8221; to the detriment of &#8220;Michigan&#8217;s auto industry and millions of American workers.&#8221; United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain echoed the sentiment, calling for the end of &#8220;offshoring and outsourcing our auto industry&#8221; and the construction of more &#8220;affordable, high-quality vehicles for the American consumer, built by UAW autoworkers.&#8221;\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The evidence of a Chinese espionage campaign via connected cars like Mercedes-Benz is thin.
