Sens. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich.,\u00a0and\u00a0Bernie\u00a0Moreno,\u00a0R-Ohio, sponsored the bipartisan legislation, which would codify and expand restrictions established under the \u200bBiden administration, arguing that it \u201ccloses the door on Chinese-origin vehicles<\/a>, software, and key components at every stage, from\u00a0production, importation,\u00a0to\u00a0sale,\u00a0so that data gathered on US roads\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be funneled back to the Chinese government.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cChinese cars are surveillance packages on wheels, with the ability to collect on American citizens and transmit that data back to Beijing,\u201d Slotkin said in a statement.<\/p>\n Moreno said the measure aims to prevent \u201can absolute, total, and complete destruction of our industrial base.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cChina\u2019s auto industry was not built to compete, it was built to destroy American manufacturing, gut the middle class and undermine our national security,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n But Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who chairs the Commerce Committee, warned that Mercedes-Benz could effectively be shut out of the US market if the\u00a0legislation becomes law\u00a0without changes and said the bill needed changes.<\/p>\n Cruz accused General Motors of pushing for the measure to cut Mercedes-Benz out of the market<\/a> and make its Cadillac brand more appealing.<\/p>\n \u201cWe would never consider\u201d banning Mercedes-Benz sales in the US, he said.<\/p>\n GM \u200bcontended that the legislation does not attempt to target an individual automaker, saying it \u201csupports policies that protect and strengthen American manufacturing and the \u200bglobal competitiveness of US automakers.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs we have said many times, we can compete with anyone in the world when we are given a level playing field,\u201d GM said.<\/p>\n Mercedes-Benz highlighted its extensive US operations while stressing that it \u201ccontinues to support legislation designed to protect US national security.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMercedes-Benz also remains \u200ccommitted to \u2060ensuring that any legislation does not impact our operations.
