Born more than 60 years ago with an air-cooled flat-six slung out behind its rear axle, its unorthodox architecture, and early reputation for suddenly swapping ends mid-corner, would have had Charles Darwin scratching his beard and predicting a speedy route to extinction.

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Instead, the 911 survived, evolved and became one of the most successful sports cars ever built. In fact, it came remarkably close to disappearing in 1981 until newly appointed Porsche president Peter Schutz famously saved the model from cancellation.

Could Schutz have imagined that more than four decades later there would be more 911 variants than flavours at Baskin-Robbins? Or that despite continually climbing prices, the 911 would remain one of Porsche’s strongest sellers worldwide? In both Canada and the United States, 911 sales increased in 2025 while virtually every other Porsche model saw declines. Darwin would surely be scratching his beard again.

Which brings us to the 2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S sitting in my driveway.

Vicarious Take 1

“The 911 Targa 4S occupies a sweet spot in Porsche’s lineup, delivering breathtaking performance with everyday usability and one of the most distinctive roof designs in the automotive world.”

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Finished in stunning Aventurine Green Metallic and carrying an as-tested price of $226,680 CAD, this is no bargain. Yet despite sitting roughly in the middle of Porsche’s expansive 911 lineup, I’d argue the Targa 4S is the Goldilocks model, the one that gets just about everything right.

The Targa’s retractable roof delivers the security and refinement of a coupe with open-air motoring at the touch of a button. Watching the roof perform its elaborate mechanical ballet never gets old. Being an “S” means it’s seriously quick, while the “4” signifies all-wheel drive, adding welcome stability and confidence in changing conditions.

It also retains the traditional rear seats. Calling them practical would be generous, but they do offer additional storage. Adults? Not so much.

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Powertrain

Mounted behind the rear axle is Porsche’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six producing 473 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with Porsche’s superb eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. A manual gearbox is no longer available on the Targa 4S, with three pedals now reserved for select models such as the Carrera T and GT3.

Despite its turbochargers, the engine feels wonderfully immediate. There is virtually no perceptible lag as power builds relentlessly toward its 7,300-rpm redline. Just as impressive is its soundtrack, evolving from a deep mechanical growl at idle to an unforgettable flat-six wail as the tachometer climbs.

Porsche’s PDK remains the benchmark dual-clutch transmission. Shifts are instantaneous, whether left to its own devices or commanded through the steering-wheel paddles. In Sport and Sport Plus modes, it seems almost telepathic, always selecting exactly the right gear.

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Under normal driving conditions the Targa 4S behaves primarily as a rear-wheel-drive sports car, but a sophisticated multi-plate clutch can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the front wheels whenever additional traction is required. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) further enhances agility by lightly braking the inside rear wheel during aggressive cornering.

Rear-axle steering is available with the standard suspension and included with the optional Sport Suspension, which lowers the car by 10 mm. A variable sport exhaust system is standard.

Exterior

No matter the variant, the latest 992.2-generation Porsche 911 remains one of the most recognizable silhouettes in automotive design. Low, wide and unmistakably purposeful, it continues to evolve without abandoning its heritage.

      2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

      2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

      2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

This tester’s Aventurine Green Metallic paint ($3,400) beautifully complements the iconic brushed aluminum Targa bar and optional 20- and 21-inch Carrera Classic wheels ($1,430).

Other tasteful upgrades include body-coloured mirrors ($750), painted rear grille slats ($820) and Porsche’s beautifully machined Exclusive Design fuel cap ($250), one of those small details that quietly reminds you this is something special.

Interior

Slip behind the wheel and you’re reminded why the 911 has remained the benchmark driver’s car for generations.

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

The low seating position feels perfectly natural, while the optional 14-way adaptive Sport Seats ($2,650) are firm initially but provide excellent long-distance comfort and support.

Our tester’s two-tone Black and Chalk Beige leather interior ($4,040) gives the cabin an elegant, almost bespoke atmosphere.

The $6,020 Premium Package is highly recommended, bundling ventilated seats, Surround View with Active Parking Support, Lane Change Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, an ionizer and a Bose surround sound system.

Additional upgrades include the Leather Interior Package with Light Silver accents ($1,440), Porsche crests embossed into the headrests ($410), a heated GT Sport steering wheel ($370) and Porsche’s 930 Leather Package ($1,700).

2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

The centre console continues Porsche’s preference for physical controls, with dedicated buttons for climate functions, audio settings and roof operation surrounding the compact electronic gear selector.

New for 2026 is a cooled wireless smartphone charging compartment integrated into the centre console.

One notable change for longtime Porsche enthusiasts is the disappearance of two traditional 911 elements. Sport Plus sharpened every response. The flat-six sang as the tachometer raced toward redline. The front end bit eagerly into corners while the chassis displayed remarkable balance and composure.

This is a sports car that rewards commitment. The harder you lean into it, the more it comes alive.

That’s the magic of a 911.

Conclusion

The first 911 S arrived in 1967, just a few years after the original 911 debuted. While the “S” once stood for “Super,” today it represents Sport, and for many enthusiasts, it remains the sweet spot of the entire lineup.

Yes, the 2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S commands an eye-watering price, and Porsche’s options list can inflate that figure even further. But viewed purely as a sports car, few machines blend everyday usability, timeless design and breathtaking capability quite so effortlessly.

Not every 911 needs to be the fastest or the most extreme. The Targa 4S succeeds because it balances open-air freedom, genuine daily drivability and world-class performance into one remarkably complete package.

It isn’t simply another version of the 911.

It may just be the one that best captures everything the Porsche legend has become.

Quick Specs: 2026 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Base Price: $192,500 CAD (approx. starting MSRP)
Price as Tested: $226,680 CAD
Powertrain: 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six
Horsepower/Torque: 473 hp / 390 lb-ft
Transmission: 8-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic
Drivetrain: All-wheel drive
Fuel Economy: 13.9 / 9.8 / 12.0 L/100 km (city/highway/combined)
Fuel Tank Capacity: 67 L
Observed Fuel Economy: 12.5 L/100 km
Basic Warranty: 4 years / 80,000 km
Powertrain Warranty: 4 years / 80,000 km
Website: Porsche Canada

Who Should Buy It?
The 911 Targa 4S is for drivers who want one sports car to do it all.
