The figure is <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/er-wait-boarding-hospital-dementia-daf48acf11631cffdaeb5de4abe3722e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to rise<\/a> to 2.8 million by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Museums and other cultural institutions across the globe have added specialized, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TNlZww6JEGk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">barrier-free tours<\/a> and guides to their repertoire in recent years, some made possible by <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TNlZww6JEGk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advances in technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">These include <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/travel-38dc370f963a4bfe9ebccd7cc7156a31\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sign-language tours<\/a> for people who are deaf and hard of hearing, touch-based events for those with <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lego-bricks-for-blind-audio-braille-instructions-5a2a27de4354a0b1443171c3f24f29e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blindness or low vision<\/a> and programs for people on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Berlin chapter of Malteser Deutschland last year designed a cultural program in the capital catering to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/national-comedy-center-alzheimers-memory-cafes-ad0ea8d6f42dc815917b2e72cf6a7bde\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">people with dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cPeople with dementia aren\u2019t very visible in our society. It\u2019s still a major taboo subject, yet it actually affects a great many people and it\u2019s important that they continue to be at the heart of society,&#8221; project coordinator Christine Gruschka said. &#8220;They have a right to participate, just like everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Millions of people around the globe have some <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/meet-the-robotic-dog-designed-for-seniors-living-with-dementia-7df03b8c6b874095b20b5919194e22c2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">form of dementia<\/a>, a progressive loss of memory, reasoning, language skills and other cognitive functions. People can experience changes in personality, emotional control and even visual perception. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a> is the most widely recognized type, but there are many others, with their own symptoms and underlying biology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Malteser Berlin&#8217;s tours for people with dementia occur at the zoo, the Museum of Natural History, Britzer Garden and Charlottenburg Palace, with hopes of expanding to other locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201c\u2018Normal\u2019 tours \u2014 so-called normal tours \u2014 are often too fast, too loud, with too many people and too many distractions,&#8221; Gruschka said. &#8220;That\u2019s why we\u2019ve made it our goal to create programs specifically for people with dementia: Where they still feel seen, where they feel comfortable, and where they can still show that they\u2019re still here and can still be part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Krueger, Jansen and Barkow followed Malteser Berlin tour coordinator Carola Tembrink around the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/baby-sumatra-tiger-making-good-progress-at-berlin-zoo-4094b6c59ee74babafc9ad47b242f954\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Zoo<\/a>, accompanied by their daughters and a caregiver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tembrink skipped the majority of the zoo&#8217;s vast offerings to focus on the hippo, rhino and elephant habitats so the participants would not get too tired or overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe zoo is a wonderful place for tours like this because almost everyone who grew up in Berlin has been here as a child,&#8221; Tembrink said. &#8220;And especially for people with dementia, childhood memories are often still present \u2014 they just need to be jogged a bit \u2014 and that happens naturally when they see the animals, smell the air as they enter the zoo, or when they go into the rhino house and catch a different scent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For the caregivers and families, the tours are a lifeline. During long and sometimes frustrating days of caring for someone with dementia, a specialized tour lets them connect with others who understand the journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Krueger was formally diagnosed last year with dementia, but her daughter, Kerstin Hoehne, said the symptoms appeared more than two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWhat\u2019s nice is that it\u2019s also with, let\u2019s say, like-minded people, that you\u2019re not alone, but that you have a sense of belonging because everyone else might have the same problem,\u201d Hoehne said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Barkow&#8217;s daughter, Manuela Grudda, said the tour brought them closer together. Grudda pushed Barkow&#8217;s wheelchair through the zoo, her hands caressing her mother&#8217;s shoulders or pointing out the animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI can\u2019t really communicate with her in a normal way, of course, but I see that when I show her something, she looks at it, she\u2019s paying attention, and that\u2019s important,\u201d Grudda said. \u201cAnd it just makes me happy that she\u2019s not just in her own world, but also in this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute\u2019s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
