Polizei Berlin\/Handout via REUTERS (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s notice warned the public to avoid \u201cdirect contact\u201d with the suspect, saying that he may be armed and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Police had said earlier that they had identified a suspect who has ties to Islamic groups in the German capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed,\u201d police spokesperson Florian Nath said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Nath added that \u201cwe still have no information whatsoever regarding his specific motives, the exact sequence of events, or his role in the crime itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/download.-1..jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Emergency personnel and police gather in Berlin, early Sunday, 26 July 2026\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Emergency personnel and police gather in Berlin, early Sunday, 26 July 2026 (AP)<\/p>\n<p>A van slammed into people gathered for Berlin\u2019s famed LGBTQ+ event on Saturday night, killing one person, injuring at least 17 others and prompting police to call off the celebrations and a concert in the German capital hours after they had begun.<\/p>\n<p>Police said some of the victims had life-threatening injuries. <\/p>\n<p>In a post on X, police called on everyone to leave the site of the event immediately as ambulances and firefighters attended to the victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects,\u201d Mr Nath said on a short video released on the Berlin police account on X.<\/p>\n<p>Police spokesperson Alexander Klute told The Associated Press later that \u201cat this point, we don\u2019t know anything about possible motives, the identity of the perpetrator or the perpetrators, or anything of that nature\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2287003750...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A Berlin firefighter rests near the scene where one person was killed and 16 injured after a car is believed to have hit the crowd on the outskirts of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in Berlin, on 26 July 2026\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A Berlin firefighter rests near the scene where one person was killed and 16 injured after a car is believed to have hit the crowd on the outskirts of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in Berlin, on 26 July 2026 (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>According to police, a white van had driven into the Tiergarten park around 10pm, which is next to the route that the pride march had passed along earlier, and hit several people before colliding with a tree. <\/p>\n<p>Police could not say how many officers had been deployed to the scene but that it was \u201cdefinitely a lot of police\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, more than 2,200 police officers have been on duty in Berlin since Saturday morning to protect the pride parade and other LGBTQ+ events in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Police were conducting witness interrogations at the park during the night and were investigating accounts that in addition to the crash some victims appeared to have suffered stab wounds \u2013 but that it was too early to draw any conclusion from those accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin mayor Kai Wegner expressed shock, saying that \u201cfollowing a peaceful and vibrant pride parade, the rally for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society,\u201d Mr Wegner said. \u201cI have confidence in the police and security authorities, who will be working around the clock to investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, authorities called on possible witnesses to come forward and share with police any video or photos they might have taken at the scene of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The city also activated a crisis hotline for people missing friends or family members.Hundreds of thousands of people had come to Berlin on Saturday to celebrate at Berlin\u2019s pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day.
