{"id":66404,"date":"2026-08-04T09:07:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T09:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/66404\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T09:07:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T09:07:12","slug":"lufthansa-warns-profits-could-fall-with-volatile-fuel-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/66404\/","title":{"rendered":"Lufthansa warns profits could fall with volatile fuel prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"article-description\">The group plans to retire or temporarily ground several aircraft to streamline operations<\/p>\n<p>Published Tue, Aug 4, 2026 \u00b7 04:18 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[LONDON\/FRANKFURT] German airline group Lufthansa warned on Tuesday (Aug 4) that its operating profit could fall this year after the figure more than halved in the second quarter due to <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/energy-commodities\/trump-blasts-exxonmobil-chevron-making-too-much-money-demands-lower-petrol-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">higher fuel costs tied to the US-Iran war<\/a>, sending its shares sharply lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The group forecast its 2026 adjusted earnings before interest and tax (Ebit) would be 1.7 billion (US$2 billion) to 2.2 billion euros. It had previously projected adjusted Ebit well above the previous year\u2019s 1.96 billion euros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Shares dropped 8 per cent in early trade as investors focused on the uncertain outlook and worse-than-expected quarterly results, particularly rising unit costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cToday, we reflect on a challenging second quarter that was once again marked by multiple geopolitical crises and uncertainties,\u201d CEO Carsten Spohr said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cDespite our further improvement in load factor and a significant increase in yield, we were unable to fully offset the considerable rise in fuel costs.\u201d The load factor is a measure of how full an airline\u2019s planes are.<\/p>\n<p>Capacity cuts<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The US war on Iran sent fuel prices surging when it began in late February. While they have eased back somewhat, they remain highly volatile amid uncertainty whether diplomatic efforts will succeed \u2013 creating <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/transport-logistics\/can-sia-achieve-soft-touchdown-after-its-surprise-s76-million-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a major headache for businesses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">European airlines, including British Airways-owner IAG and Air France-KLM, have been <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/sia-posts-s76-million-q1-loss-despite-record-revenue-fuel-cost-jumps-almost-s1-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hit hard by higher fuel costs<\/a> despite hedging programmes. Both have said they plan to trim capacity to help offset the impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Lufthansa said capacity fell about 3 per cent in Q2, partly due to strike days in April. However, its capacity plans for the full year remain unchanged and are expected to be broadly flat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Adjusted Ebit fell to 383 million euros, from 870 million euros a year earlier, below analysts\u2019 average forecast of 401 million euros in a company-compiled consensus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-6 border-b border-gray-250 pb-4 font-poppins text-4xs font-medium tracking-10 text-gray-515\">SEE ALSO<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"block h-full w-full\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/transport-logistics\/airlines-resume-some-middle-east-flights-disruption-continues?ref=article-see-also\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"relative z-10 h-full w-full object-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/a8f018bb34c9b0d0037e21e45893439f0bfd5b1da99b401522b900606fe81206.webp\" alt=\"The tails of Air France, KLM and Brussels Airlines planes on the tarmac at Manchester Airport in Manchester, Britain, April 30, 2026.\" width=\"3643\" height=\"2305\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The company now expects 2026 fuel costs of 8.66 billion euros, compared with an earlier forecast of 8.9 billion euros.<\/p>\n<p>Retiring old planes<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Lufthansa said it plans to retire or temporarily ground several aircraft to streamline operations, reduce fuel consumption and limit exposure to unhedged fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">In its financial report, Lufthansa said this would include the early retirement of <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/opinion-features\/scrapping-business-class-could-halve-aviation-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fuel-intensive long-haul aircraft<\/a> such as the Airbus A340-600, and the temporary grounding of two Boeing 747-400s from the start of the winter flight schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Lufthansa added that 86 per cent of its fuel needs for this year are hedged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6 inline-block\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Metzler said in a research note that Lufthansa was now justified in raising ticket prices to recoup higher costs.
