(AFP pic)<br \/>\nFRANKFURT: German aviation group Lufthansa said Tuesday that volatile jet fuel costs, thanks to the Mideast war, could mean that it makes less this year than last, sending its shares down sharply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">The firm now expects core profit of between \u20ac1.7 billion and \u20ac2.2 billion (US$2 billion and US$2.5 billion) for 2026, having previously expected to have \u201csignificantly\u201d higher earnings this year compared to the 2025 figure of \u20ac1.96 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Speaking on an earnings call, Lufthansa finance boss Till Streichert said there was a question mark over how much Lufthansa could pass higher fuel costs onto customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cWe are of course expecting to continue our strategy in the second half of the year of raising ticket prices to compensate for higher fuel costs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cVisibility there is somewhat lower than it would otherwise be because we are seeing customers book less in advance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Lufthansa shares were down over 11% in trading on the Frankfurt exchange as of 9.05am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cExcluding one-off effects, core profit fell almost 56% to \u20ac383 million in the second quarter,\u201d Lufthansa said, even as sales rose 10% to \u20ac11.1 billion in the three months to the end of June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Higher fuel prices increased costs by about \u20ac750 million, according to the airline group, which also operates airlines including Swiss, Brussels and Eurowings in addition to the Lufthansa brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cLufthansa had managed to pass on about 60% of higher fuel costs to customers,\u201d Streichert said on the call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cWe could make up for a good amount of these additional costs,\u201d he said. \u201cBut not entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Lufthansa is the latest airline to have been hit by soaring jet fuel prices as the war in the Middle East rumbles on, disrupting supplies of petrochemical products down the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">British Airways parent IAG on Friday said net profit fell more than a third, while Air France-KLM, Easyjet, American Airlines and Ryanair last month all reported nosediving profits as a result of the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Strike action at Lufthansa also hit earnings by \u20ac200 million in the three months to the end of June, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Thousands of Lufthansa flights have been cancelled so far this year, hit by repeated walkouts from cabin crew and pilots in a dispute over pay and pensions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lufthansa shares fell more than 11% in trading on the Frankfurt exchange on Tuesday morning.
