German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday pledged support for global action on climate change in a speech to the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin.<\/p>\n
“We recognize the seriousness of climate change, and Germany is determined to make a strong contribution to the Paris Agreement,” Merz told participants. “Germany will remain a reliable partner in this effort.”<\/p>\n
“We need a climate policy that is multilateral, that is ambitious and that is effective,” the chancellor argued.<\/p>\n
Germany has hosted the Petersberg Climate Dialogue since 2010 as a complement to the UN climate conferences. The meeting was first held in Petersberg near Bonn, but now takes place regularly in the German capital.<\/p>\n
Around 400 participants are expected this year, including representatives from the business sector. Turkish Environment Minister Murat Kurum, whose country is hosting the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Antalya in November, was among the speakers on Tuesday, when the meeting opened.<\/p>\n
Merz said the industrial transition to clean energy is at the heart of contemporary discussions and offers a wide range of opportunities.<\/p>\n
But climate action “must not endanger the industrial base in Germany,” he warned. “A transformation that leads to deindustrialization will not find acceptance among the people.”<\/p>\n
Germany has set ambitious climate targets, aiming to become climate-neutral by 2045.<\/p>\n
