The\u00a0promotion is scheduled to run through Aug. 10, according to the automaker\u2019s press release, and represents a partnership between the automaker and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sony\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sony_1\" data-tag=\"sony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony<\/a>-Marvel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSome of the scathing comments on Reddit\u2019s r\/BMW forum and other subreddits include: \u201cThat\u2019s some absolute bullshit\u201d; \u201cInsanely dystopian\u201d; \u201cThis needs to be made illegal before everyone starts doing it\u201d; \u201c$130K to get a Spider-Man commercial\u201d; \u201csounds like a Black Mirror episode\u201d and simply: \u201cFuck everything about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA banner touting the film first appears when the car is started, though owners have to click on the ad to see the full video. Still, one owner claimed BMW has been pushing increasingly intrusive videos onto its dashboard space. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s pretty clear that BMW has been trying to slowly normalize displaying ads,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThey started off with mostly just celebratory videos, which slowly became ads about their own products, and now they feel confident enough to move on to third-party ads. I think the more nefarious part is that, with the screen controlling almost every feature of the car, you\u2019re essentially forced to watch the ad before you can interact with your own property.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSeveral commenters compared the Brand New Day ad to Apple\u2019s famously backfired 2014 stunt of putting a U2 album into the iTunes libraries of more than half a billion customers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBMW\u2019s press release branded the video \u201ca special surprise\u201d for its drivers. A company spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment on the backlash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/spider-man-brand-new-day\/\" id=\"auto-tag_spider-man-brand-new-day_1\" data-tag=\"spider-man-brand-new-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a>, there\u2019s also product placement for BMW when Spidey (Tom Holland) finds himself in a random civilian\u2019s BMW and the driver activates the car\u2019s Sport Mode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCars are among the most common forms of product placement in movies, from Aston Martin in James Bond films to Mercedes-Benz in Devil Wears Prada 2 and Chevrolet in Transformers, but it is usually a one-way street, with the car being featured inside the movie, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/113327-bmw-putting-spider-man-ads-dashboard-after-promising.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TechSpot<\/a>, the company previously said it wouldn\u2019t sell ads on its dashboards. In December 2023, a BMW senior vice president\u00a0said\u00a0during an industry roundtable: \u201cTo say I\u2019m selling the screen to play a commercial \u2014 I don\u2019t see it.
