Investigators said a separate, unidentified object then struck a different cargo plane after that aircraft aborted its landing when the airport shut down, and the plane sustained minor damage and diverted safely to Hannover about 125 miles away.<\/p>\n

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt cut short his summer break to travel to the airport and said there was no danger to passengers or airport employees while the north runway reopened after about two hours and the south runway underwent scheduled maintenance.<\/p>\n

The Guardian later reported that one of the Ukrainian aircraft next to where the bomb drone was found was loaded with military ammunition, citing a classified police report quoted by WDR and NDR and the S\u00fcddeutsche newspaper.<\/p>\n

The BBC said a robot was deployed at Leipzig\/Halle Airport after the device was spotted by an employee near Ukrainian cargo planes overnight, and police removed the detonator before carrying out a controlled explosion.<\/p>\n

Blame, hybrid threat framing<\/p>\n

Alexander Dobrindt told reporters that Germany faced a \u201cnew level of danger\u201d and said only an apparently \u201cripped\u201d detonator had prevented the device going off near Ukrainian cargo planes on the tarmac at the shipping and military hub.<\/p>\n

Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the German parliament\u2019s intelligence committee, blamed Russia directly, saying, \u201cI also believe that the attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport was a targeted hybrid attack \u2013 in other words, an attempted act of terrorism \u2013 orchestrated by Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev pointed directly at Moscow on Welt TV, telling the BBC: “Who else could it be but Russia?”<\/p>\n

The BBC reported that Dobrindt suggested the investigation may point to a possible “competition” that “may also involve foreign powers” while German police warned of a potential Russian involvement which Moscow denied.<\/p>\n

The Guardian said German authorities stopped short of pointing the finger at Moscow, but Dobrindt said investigators were treating the incident as part of a \u201cprofessional hybrid threat scenario\u201d with a focus on \u201cforeign powers\u201d as likely perpetrators.<\/p>\n

Investigation stakes and fallout<\/p>\n

The DW report said the Federal prosecutor\u2019s office stated, “To this end, professional explosives and a detonator were attached to the drone,” and noted evidence suggesting a mid-air collision between a plane and possibly another drone.<\/p>\n

The Guardian said the discovery of the drone led the airport to suspend air traffic, forcing a DHL cargo plane from Marseille on its approach to take off again, and it then collided with what was believed to be a second drone.<\/p>\n

The BBC said the southern runway remained closed while the northern runway resumed at 01:55 (23:55 GMT on Tuesday), and it described Leipzig\/Halle Airport as used by the Germany military and Nato allies for the transport of military goods and as a base for Ukraine\u2019s Antonov Airlines.<\/p>\n
