Now it might finally be embracing the vehicle Americans actually can’t seem to get enough of. According to reports from Germany, VW is preparing a serious assault on the US truck market.

The alleged plan forms part of a wider rethink of Volkswagen’s American strategy. New management is said to be taking charge of the operation while the company reassesses its product lineup in an effort to grow beyond its disappointingly modest 4 percent slice of the US market, Handelsblatt says.

Related: VW’s Secret Amarok SUV Refuses To Stay Buried

VW has been teasing a U.S. truck for years, most notably with the Atlas Tanoak concept.

A pickup makes plenty of sense. Trucks remain some of the highest margin vehicles sold in America, yet the automaker hasn’t sold one in the US since the Rabbit- based Volkswagen Pickup ended its five-year run way back in 1984. It’s not like VW abandoned trucks globally, but models like the Amarok never officially reached US showrooms.

Volkswagen wants the truck on sale before the end of the decade, the intel says, with production taking place at its existing plant in Tennessee. Building it locally would avoid the tariffs attached to imported pickups (which eventually killed off VW’s Bus-based pickup sales in the US in 1971) while making better use of the Chattanooga factory, where production of the ID.4 recently ended earlier than expected.

The obvious question is whether Volkswagen will develop the truck itself. Given the cost of creating an all new body on frame pickup, another partnership feels far more likely. And Ford would be the natural candidate. The two companies already have an extensive relationship spanning both Europe and South Africa.

Amarok Equals Ranger

VW Amarok

Volkswagen’s latest Amarok (above) is effectively a Ford Ranger underneath, while the European Transporter is based on the Ford Transit. Ford, meanwhile, has used Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform for the Explorer and Capri sold in Europe.

If another collaboration happens, Volkswagen could dramatically shorten development time while giving itself a proven platform capable of competing in one of America’s toughest market segments. And although the report doesn’t mention it, VW could even theoretically twin a new pickup with Ford’s $30k electric Fathom.

A pickup alone won’t transform Volkswagen’s fortunes, though. The company still imports several of its highest volume US models from Mexico, exposing them to tariffs, and reports suggest the brand’s entire lineup is also under review as executives search for a formula that resonates more strongly with American buyers. A larger SUV that would presumably sit above the Atlas is mentioned in Handlesblatt’s report, and again that’s something Ford could assist with.

VW Amarok SUV concept.

A US-built pickup reports say will be here by 2030 could help Volkswagen crack a lucrative market it…

[20947
922,22459,1288,54,5356,8369,45804
post-69033","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-volkswagen","tag-reports","tag-scoops","tag-trucks","tag-usa","tag-volkswagen","tag-vw","tag-vw-scoops
["GET
