BERLIN, Aug 9 (Reuters) – Germany faces daily hybrid warfare attacks from abroad, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt was quoted \u200cas saying on Sunday, following a suspected attack attempt \u200cinvolving an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig\/Halle Airport.<\/p>\n
Dobrindt told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag \u200bthat foreign powers wanted to subdue Germany politically and socially by stirring up fear there.<\/p>\n
“We’re not at war, but we are the daily target of hybrid warfare,” Dobrindt said. “Espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, or \u200ccovert operations by foreign \u2060powers aimed at destabilising Germany or inflicting direct harm are a constant reality.”<\/p>\n
The newspaper’s advance release of \u2060the interview did not say whether he identified any countries in particular.<\/p>\n
After the drone loaded with explosives was discovered at the \u200bairport in \u200beastern Germany on Tuesday, some \u200bGerman lawmakers pointed the finger \u200cat Russia, which has been at war with Ukraine since its military invasion of the country in 2022.<\/p>\n
The Russian embassy in Berlin on Friday dismissed the Leipzig event as a “fabricated provocation”, saying it was another example of accusations against Russia without evidence.<\/p>\n
Dobrindt, \u200ca member of the conservative Christian \u200bSocial Union, had called the Leipzig \u200bincident a “hybrid attack scenario,” \u200band left open possible involvement by foreign powers.<\/p>\n
Germany’s \u200carmed forces on Saturday said \u200btwo drones were \u200bspotted late on Thursday over a German military base site in Mechernich, in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n
Dobrindt \u200bhighlighted the expansion of \u200cdrone research in Germany as part of the response \u200bto the new threats.<\/p>\n
