British supermarkets offer an abundance of choice, with countless flavours, forms, and foundations for crisps.

Having said that, I’m particularly fond of a tortilla chip. They evoke memories of sunny afternoons at barbecues with unlimited dips, and children’s celebrations where there were invariably at least three enormous bowls on a buffet spread.

They’re the ideal carrier for guacamole, salsa and sour cream. I’ll invariably reach for the Doritos, which I consider the gold standard of tortilla chips.

Doritos will always be OG tortilla chip(Image: Ellen Jenne)

So I chose to compare several supermarket own-label alternatives against Doritos Cool Original. Here’s what happened…

Doritos Cool Original – £2.50

Doritos will forever be my reference point when it comes to tortilla chips. They consistently appear to pack more flavour than competing chips, particularly when the primary choices at supermarkets are typically lightly salted, reports the Express.

As the name indicates, Cool Original serves as the foundation for all the other varieties. Personally, I’m a Chilli Heatwave enthusiast, but I would never refuse Cool Original if it were offered.

You’re greeted with an initial burst of sour cream upon the first bite, though it’s not so intense that it dominates the palate. The subtle tanginess from the sour cream instantly stimulates saliva in my mouth.

Given the delicate flavour composition compared to bolder varieties, the aftertaste doesn’t persist excessively on the palate. Unlike garlic or onion, which tend to linger.

The tortilla chip delivers a pleasing crunch, snapping crisply as it dissolves in your mouth. They’re airy, zesty and moreish.

In my opinion, nothing surpasses Doritos. That said, I’m open to being convinced otherwise.

Total – 8/10

Aldi’s tortilla chips are just as good as Doritos(Image: Ellen Jenne)

Aldi’s Delta Cool Tortilla Chips – 89p

Ah Aldi, perpetually the imitator of established brands. Had I not examined it carefully, the packaging could’ve instantly tricked me into believing I was purchasing the real thing.

The main distinction between Aldi and Doritos lies in the cost. You can pocket more than £1 when buying Aldi’s tortilla chips, which is brilliant if you’re attempting to economise on your weekly shopping.

Upon initial inspection, Aldi’s tortilla chips appear remarkably comparable to Doritos visually, featuring specks of charring and granular maize dusting. They also possess the same subdued golden tone as the Doritos.

They deliver a more robust flavour owing to the dominant notes of garlic, cheese and tomato, but lack the mouth-watering sharpness you experience from Doritos. I believe that’s what Aldi’s is lacking: a zingy element.

The flavour is somewhat understated by comparison. While the chips do provide a crunch, it doesn’t endure as long, and you’re left with sticky fragments of crisps lodged between your teeth.

We’re aware Aldi excels at providing shoppers with comparable quality products at reduced prices. That said, I’d recognise these chips aren’t Doritos purely due to the absent tanginess. Nevertheless, they certainly offer Doritos serious competition.

Total – 8/10

Tesco’s tortilla chips had a funky flavour(Image: Ellen Jenne)

Tesco’s Cool Tortilla Chips – 89p

I’ll be frank, I’ve consistently felt somewhat let down by Tesco’s crisp range. While supermarkets attempt to provide more affordable alternatives to established brands, Tesco’s has, in my view, always come up short.

Once more, they feature virtually identical shape, size and colouring to the other tortilla chips. That’s where the resemblance stops.

The flavour was entirely different to Doritos, employing creamy tomato, garlic and pepper as its primary taste profile. For me, the flavour is rather odd.

There’s a tanginess present, but it almost tastes acidic, though not deliberately so. Again, it’s this peculiarity I can’t shake.

The flavour isn’t necessarily unpleasant, but it’s definitely not to my taste. Hand me back the Doritos.

Total – 4/10

Sainsbury’s’ tortilla chips are bang average(Image: Ellen Jenne)

Sai

Sainsbury’s presented the first visual departure from Doritos. Rather than isosceles triangles, the shorter edge is curved instead of straight.

They’re also more yellow in hue than a subdued gold. I value Sainsbury’s attempting to create a clear distinction between its own tortilla chips and those of an established brand.

The flavour is simply described as “cool” with no main ingredients listed like the other supermarkets’. They do taste completely different to the other tortilla chips, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that makes them different. They just do!

Similar to Tesco, Sainsbury’s tortilla chips’ flavour doesn’t quite suit my palate. As you continue eating, a mild tanginess emerges before fading away.

They bring to mind the tortilla chips that pubs serve as a foundation for loaded nachos. I certainly believe these tortilla chips require pairing with additional flavours to enhance their appeal.

Fundamentally, there’s nothing particularly wrong with them, but I wouldn’t reach back into the bag for another handful. Some cheese and meat accompaniments are undoubtedly required.

Total – 5/10

Sorry, but M&S’s tortilla chips are a complete fail(Image: Ellen Jenne)

M&S Cream Cool Tortilla Chips – £1.30

M&S markets itself as an upmarket supermarket, so you’d struggle to discover well-known brands on its shelves. I adore M&S’s crisp aisle, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re seeking a traditional flavour or something slightly more adventurous.

My personal favourite? The Red Pepper Pitta Chips. They are incredibly moreish.

Nevertheless, M&S’s tortilla chips are not. They appear remarkably similar to Sainsbury’s, but the taste and texture were worlds apart.

In reality, M&S’s tortilla chips have a notable absence of flavour. According to the ingredients, the primary components are yoghurt, garlic, tomatoes and cheddar.

Not a single ingredient could be detected on the palate. Any trace of flavour is entirely absent.

The texture presents its own challenges; they taste almost stale upon first bite. Somewhat chewy with none of the satisfying crunch you’d expect.

When superior-tasting tortilla chips are readily available for under a pound elsewhere, the £1.30 price tag is difficult to justify.

Frankly, M&S has come as a disappointment here. Many of its crisp offerings are outstanding, yet its tortilla chips fall well short of the retailer’s usually reliable standards.

A complete absence of flavour combined with an off-putting texture makes for a thoroughly underwhelming snack. The pitta chips will be getting my custom instead.

Total – 3/10

I put own-brand tortilla chips from M&S, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury’s to the taste test against Doritos Cool…

[21128
21143,10216,21790,27288,21144,27289
post-69309","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-aldi","tag-aldi","tag-food-and-drink","tag-marks-spencer","tag-sainsburys","tag-sud-nord","tag-tesco
["GET
