But Nio, the Chinese brand known for its battery-swapping system and premium electric-vehicle image, has registered just 18 cars there so far this year.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In July, Nio registered three cars in Germany, down 93.6 per cent from a year earlier. It was the third consecutive month at that level, leaving its registrations in the first seven months nearly 90 per cent lower, according to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) last week.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, some of Nio\u2019s Chinese peers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/sc.mp\/begi3?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=3362905&amp;utm_medium=share_widget\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\">are seeing explosive growth<\/a> in Europe\u2019s biggest economy. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/sc.mp\/kq173?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=3356760&amp;utm_medium=share_widget\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\">BYD<\/a> registered 5,240 cars in July, up 365 per cent from a year earlier. Xpeng, another mid- to premium-market brand, registered 1,253. Meanwhile, Germany\u2019s battery-electric market grew 61.7 per cent to 78,609 cars.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The weakness extends beyond Germany. Nio registered only two cars in the Netherlands in July, according to Dutch industry body BOVAG. Registration figures record the moment a vehicle is licensed, and may not fully reflect sales under subscription models.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A spokesperson from Nio said the company remains committed to developing its business in Europe, supporting its users, and strengthening its research and development capabilities and local presence.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cNio has no plans to retreat from Europe,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Beatrix Keim, director of Centre Automotive Research, a German automotive think tank, said Nio entered the market \u201ctoo unknown, too high priced, with a strange system that was complicated, because the swapping stations were not set up, and later not in sufficient quantity\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chinese carmakers are gaining ground in Germany, Europe\u2019s biggest car market.
