{"id":72854,"date":"2026-08-15T05:14:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T05:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/72854\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T05:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T05:14:46","slug":"plans-to-ban-white-swimmers-from-berlin-public-pool-trigger-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/72854\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans to ban white swimmers from Berlin public pool trigger backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Berlin pool was forced to cancel an event that excluded white swimmers after it faced a backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Volksb\u00fchne, a theatre in the city centre, was allocated \u20ac300,000 (\u00a3255,000) of taxpayers&#8217; money to open a &#8220;people&#8217;s swimming pool&#8221;, which it initially pledged would be &#8220;open for all who are seeking to cool down in the increasingly hot Berlin summers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the Volksb\u00fchne advertised an event scheduled for Friday in which the pool would be open &#8220;exclusively to black communities&#8221; for six hours as part of a collaboration with the non-governmental organisation Each One Teach One.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stefan Evers, the city&#8217;s finance minister, who is running as the Christian Democrat <a data-ylk=\"slk:candidate for mayor;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/07\/11\/berlin-mayor-quits-election-backlash-tennis-power-cut\/\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">candidate for mayor<\/a>, said: &#8220;I don&#8217;t believe in dividing people by skin colour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He added: &#8220;I understood the &#8216;People&#8217;s Swimming Pool&#8217; as a swimming pool for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"People swim and visit the newly opened Volksbad\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"597\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_telegraph_258\/c03f0fdcc02aef2d592d6a4d7b63c158.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The pool was forced to cancel the event after facing a backlash &#8211; Volodymyr Sindieiev\/Anadolu via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The move was also opposed by Christoph Meyer, the centre-Right Free Democratic Party candidate, who said: &#8220;Public spaces must bring society together, not segregate people <a data-ylk=\"slk:based on skin colour;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/racism\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">based on skin colour<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Elif Eralp, the Left Party&#8217;s candidate for mayor and the current front-runner in September&#8217;s election, defended the exclusion of white swimmers, saying: &#8220;On Friday, an association has booked the pool for its members legally. In doing so, the People&#8217;s Swimming Pool provides access for people who are frequently affected by exclusion and racism.
