In Germany, the water level in the Rhine has fallen to a new historic low due to a prolonged drought affecting much of the country. The shallowing of this vital waterway has already impacted freight transport and industrial operations.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration recorded just six centimetres late on Friday evening at the Kaub gauging station near Koblenz. On Saturday morning, the reading rose slightly to eight centimetres.<\/p>\n
The Rhine in Germany Has Fallen Below 2018 Levels<\/p>\n
The previous record-low water level on this section of the Rhine was observed in 2018, when the gauge recorded 25 centimetres. Current readings are significantly lower.<\/p>\n
The gauge at Kaub measures the water level relative to a designated bank reference point. The actual navigable depth in this area is about one metre greater, but even that is insufficient for the full operation of cargo vessels.<\/p>\n
Low Water Levels in the Rhine Have Disrupted Freight Transport<\/p>\n
Due to the low water level, some cargo that was traditionally transported along the Rhine must now be moved by rail and road. However, land transport cannot fully compensate for the capacity of river shipping, particularly when it comes to large volumes and heavy loads.<\/p>\n
Restrictions on one of Germany\u2019s most important river routes are already causing supply problems. Chemical manufacturers, utility companies, and steel producers expect additional logistics costs, delays in the delivery of raw materials and products, as well as possible reductions in production volumes.<\/p>\n
