{"id":7333,"date":"2026-04-24T13:54:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T13:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/7333\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T13:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T13:54:07","slug":"cohere-to-acquire-germanys-aleph-alpha-in-sovereign-ai-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/7333\/","title":{"rendered":"Cohere to acquire Germany\u2019s Aleph Alpha in sovereign AI play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Combined company will bear Cohere name with Aidan Gomez leading as CEO.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Toronto-based AI scaleup <a href=\"https:\/\/cohere.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Cohere<\/a> announced Friday morning it will join forces with Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/aleph-alpha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Aleph Alpha<\/a> to create a \u201ctransatlantic AI powerhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gomez said the deal is \u201cbuilt on the bedrock of shared Canadian and German values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following weeks of <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-goes-deutsch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">talks<\/a> between the two companies, first reported by German newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/politik\/deutschland\/kuenstliche-intelligenz-allianz-mit-kanada-aleph-alpha-und-cohere-sprechen-ueber-fusion\/100211624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Handelsblatt<\/a>, Cohere officially made the announcement this morning. The company said in a news release that the merger will combine Cohere\u2019s global AI scale with Aleph Alpha\u2019s \u201cresearch excellence\u201d and institutional relationships. The combined company will be \u201canchored in Germany and Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4492c0d6-855b-4164-9ae5-f4d855a95f1e?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">The Financial Times<\/a> reported that the combined entity would be valued at around $20 billion. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-canadian-ai-firm-cohere-germanys-aleph-alpha-announce-merger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">The Globe and Mail<\/a>, the combined company will bear the Cohere name with Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez leading as CEO. The deal is subject to regulatory and Aleph Alpha shareholder approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source familiar with the deal told BetaKit that Cohere is buying Aleph Alpha.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition intends to address the market for sovereign AI, where countries have control over their own AI data without influence from other jurisdictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we will give enterprises and governments across Canada, Europe, and the world the technology to move from exploration to rapid, secure implementation, with the absolute certainty that their data remains their own,\u201d Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aleph Alpha co-CEO Ilhan Scheer said in his own statement that the two companies are \u201cbuilding a real counterweight for organizations that refuse to outsource control over their AI to a single provider or jurisdiction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cohere was last valued at $7 billion USD in a <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/coheres-valuation-hits-7-billion-usd-following-100-million-round-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">funding round extension<\/a> this past September.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal, German retail conglomerate and Aleph Alpha shareholder Schwarz Group has pledged to invest 500 million euros ($800 million CAD) in and lead an upcoming Series E round in the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-exec-pledges-ai-firm-will-stay-canadian-headquartered-amid-merger-reports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cohere exec pledges AI firm will s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-exec-pledges-ai-firm-will-stay-canadian-headquartered-amid-merger-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">t<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-exec-pledges-ai-firm-will-stay-canadian-headquartered-amid-merger-reports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ay Canadian-headquartered amid merger reports<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gomez said that the deal is \u201cbuilt on the bedrock of shared Canadian and German values,\u201d of privacy, security, and responsible innovation, making the combined company uniquely positioned to be the world\u2019s trusted AI partner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Cohere signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/feds-sign-new-agreement-with-cohere-to-explore-ai-uses-within-government-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">memorandum of understanding<\/a> (MOU) with the Canadian government to deploy its AI tools across the public service. In December 2024, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-secures-federal-backing-to-build-multibillion-dollar-canadian-ai-data-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">invested $240 million CAD<\/a> into Cohere\u2019s multibillion-dollar Canadian AI data centre project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to BetaKit, Canada\u2019s minister of AI Evan Solomon called the combination \u201ca big moment for Canadian AI.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCohere is Canadian-founded, Canadian-headquartered, and built on Canadian research excellence,\u201d Solomon said. \u201cAs countries look for secure, responsible, enterprise-grade AI, a Canadian-headquartered company is helping lead that future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When combined, Cohere and Aleph Alpha plan to deliver secure AI to highly-regulated and public sectors, such as finance, defence, energy, manufacturing, telecommunications, and healthcare. The combined entity will also partner with Schwarz Group to deploy a sovereign offering on its cloud service STACKIT.<\/p>\n<p>When reports of the combination talks became public, Cohere chief AI officer <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/cohere-exec-pledges-ai-firm-will-stay-canadian-headquartered-amid-merger-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Joelle Pineau quashed<\/a> concerns that Cohere would relocate, saying the company \u201cwill always remain headquartered\u201d in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Gomez said <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canadian-tech-leaders-tell-the-next-generation-to-learn-to-say-no-at-homecoming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">last June during Toronto Tech Week<\/a> that Cohere is \u201cnot for sale,\u201d adding that, \u201cAny sort of exit that would take us out of Canada is only if we fail, and we haven\u2019t failed.
