{"id":73812,"date":"2026-08-17T14:26:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T14:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/73812\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T14:26:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T14:26:08","slug":"aldi-boss-supports-burnham-crackdown-on-fake-deals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/73812\/","title":{"rendered":"Aldi boss supports Burnham crackdown on \u2018fake\u2019 deals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aldi\u2019s UK chief executive, Giles Hurley, has come out in support of prime minister Andy Burnham\u2019s campaign against \u201cphoney bargains\u201d after backlash from industry bodies, according to reporting by The Sunday Times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/retail-systems.com\/rs\/Andy_Burnham_Pledges_To_End_Rip_Off_Retailer_Deals_And_Subscription_Traps.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Following Burnham\u2019s comments<\/a>, ministers have pledged to pursue companies suspected of taking advantage of shoppers by advertising deals that make sale prices look lower than they really are.<\/p>\n<p>The British Retail Consortium quickly responded, suggesting that big supermarkets in the UK deliver \u201cthe most affordable food in Western Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hurley, who has led Aldi UK for six eight years, has weighed in, saying ministers were \u201cright to review retail \u2018sale\u2019 pricing mechanics in their work to tackle cost of living pressures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, shoppers have been bombarded with discount signs and loyalty prices that can give the impression they\u2019re getting a great deal, when the price they pay at the till can still be higher than elsewhere,\u201d he added, speaking to The Sunday Times.<\/p>\n<p>Aldi is one of the few major UK supermarkets that does not offer a traditional loyalty scheme such as Sainsbury\u2019s Nectar Card or Tesco\u2019s Clubcard.
